There is a non metal gear inside the motor head that is stripped and no longer engaging the worm drive. What happens when you try to assist the turning process (try it only on stir speed, sloooowwwww) if it starts to turn and then stops again then it is the gear I spoke of. It will require tearing down the machine, cleaning all old grease, to insure that you have no ground up parts in the grease, then replace the grease gasket and gear. Hope this helps

The bearings in the wash motor can wear and cause the machine to get louder, They can be replaced but it depends on the age of the machine if it's worth repairing or not.

If the motor is running then the water pump or the clutch to it has failed. If the motor is not running, the motor has failed. Both fixes are probably too expensive for a 20 year old machine. Unless you are very handy and resourceful it may be time for a new machine.

The KitchenAid is an excellent washing machine and I would recommend keeping it going as long as possible. The most probable cause is a broken motor couple and the cost to repair is around $100

Some further checking indicated a bad transmission. As the unit is 15 years old, I decided the best solution was a new machine! ..

replace the motor coupler...you have to remove the case and then the water pump, then the motor....the coupler in behind the motor
