MY simpletech 160 GB HD once plugged into my laptop sounds like it is trying to start(red lite in on , but not the blue lite)spinning but stops and starts and repeats this.Is it possible to get data off HD someway?

  • Anonymous May 14, 2009

Hello, My HD simpltech red lite goes on , i assume that means it is getting power. The Blue lite does not come on. I changed the cable out and still get the same thing. It sounds like the blue lite is the drive itself trying to spin. For a split second the drive sounds like it is attempting to spin but stops. and then it cycles again. I go to MY COMPUTER and i see no drive active for the external drive. The computer does not "see" it?. Will the software link help me , even if the computer does not see the drive?

tried the software you recommended but as i thought, The laptop does not see the drive for the simpletech portable drive sio it showed me nothing but the laptops drive and files.

The simpletech portable drive looks to be a sealed uni No screws or screws. its a handheld unit. Can a recovery facility get the software and data from the drive ? and your collegue said it would be 15 to 25 per gig....is that gig of the drive or the usable gigs?t. if the drive is not being able to start, could there be a problem with the initialization of the drive needle? Im concerned i wont be able to get my software and whats more the data files from the drive. If there is a way for me to get it i would rather do it my self. i just dont see how with out the laptop seeing the drive. getting a little desperate.thanks for your help.

Simpletech external hard drive has a constant red light and is no longer recognized by my laptop

It sounds like the drive could have failed. Try running a test on it using Seagate Seatools:

I have a 500GB external SimpleTech HD. Tonight it

If it was running at the time it fell, the heads crashed into the platters, and the buzzing you're hearing is the dents left in the platters spinning by 7200 times a second.
Not good. Likely will need a professional service to recover the data.

My simpledrive has disappeared and I can't get it to re-mount

have you tried plugging your HD into another computer to see if it has the same problem with another computer?
if the 2nd computer is able to detect your HD, I suggest a backup of your files and format your HD immediately. Your primary computer should be able to detect it then.
A piece of advice: try removing or unplugging your HD once in awhile. External HD is somewhat different from internal HD. :)

Simpletech hard drive not working

I have that problem similiar to yours. My simple tech stopped working for like two years so i decided to open up my simple tech and removed my HD away from the old enclosure so I can try building my own external hard drive for the first time. I bought another new 3.5 enclosure, IDE/ATA for the old HD. I put it in the new enclosure and it worked!

It's the only solution you can have. No need to retrieve data or re-format your HD. You can leave it the way you like...if you wanna reformat it...up to you.

SimpleTech 80 GB Portable HD Won't Read

It sounds like a problem with the board inside the case,- the actual hard drive is probably OK. Opening the case will void any warranty but there may not be much left anyway. There should be 4 screws in the bottom of the drive,- front 2 may be hidden under a sticker. Try installing the drive in your new case or an empty drive bay inside your computer. I have had external hard drive cases fail before and the actual hard drive was ok.

Unresponsive harddrive

hi,
you have definitely got a dead HD (hard-drive) there, nothing you can do about it.
sounds like the force of the shock has damaged the HD beyond repair.
HD work by i high precision arm that reads data on a spinning platter, the chances are you have damaged the arm and the click is where the arm is trying to read the HD with no luck

sorry
