Install the Driver manually, the automatic installation of the driver is not installing the drivers properly, that is why when you restart the system it is not able to identify the device. for this uninstall the driver restart your system then install the driver manually.

go to the support site for your motherboard, there you will get universal bus architecture device drive. Install this before you install the Audio/Sound driver.

SOURCE: my sound driver is not working
Try searching for the problem on the Microsoft site. I had a similar problem about a year ago and it was because of a recent windows update and there was a fix available.
Sorry I can't clarify better...

This is eSupport.Sony.com, and the page for the Sony Vaio PCV-RS420,
Click on the + sign next to -> Audio (Sound) 1 files
You will now see ->
Original-ADI SoundMAX Audio Device Driver, Version 126.96.36.19922 for the Microsoft Windows Operating System <- in blue.
There is a globe with a green arrow to the right of this. Click on this globe/arrow icon.
You will be taken to another window. There is a globe/arrow icon, once more. Click on it.
Now follow the instructions.
Should a Microsoft 'Squawk Box' pop-up, ignore it. "Warning. This software does not have a digital certificate ya-da, ya-da"
It's from Sony, and I assure you it's safe.
Click on Run, and in the next small window, click on Run again. If you have problems, I suggest you come back and post an additional comment. We'll get it straightened out.
I suggest the Windows update may not be a good thing. Windows has thousands of generic drivers.
The key word here is "Generic"
They are not THE drivers made by Sony for THIS laptop. I suggest using THE drivers.
