Yep... my Sony KP-46WT500 convergence just took a **** on me as well.
Flash Focus is useless, cant read menu text. I dont know a damn thing
about electronics, so I'm at the mercy of a repair technician.

Could someone tell me what "IC" stands for so I can at least sound like I know what I'm talking about and perhaps NOT get taken to the cleaners??

    same as discribed.

This should cost you about 300 to 400 bucks to repair. If the service wants more, they are ripping you off. The convergence IC's are whats bad in this set and both of them cost less the 30 bucks. Good Luck

Being ripped off is a judgement based on what kind of service

is delivered and the quality of parts used. For instance, will a

qualified technician do the work in the home in one trip or two?

Or will the whole set be taken to the shop for repair with

pick/up and delivery charges incurred? Who will be doing the

actual work--a senior tech or not?

Will parts be generic or OEM qulity?

What is the reputation of servicer?

What will the warranty be??-------T.

I don't know what concave means

The curve of a lens is either convex or concave, that causes light to be focused depending on the direction of the curve.

So to answer your question, concave is just a bulging 'out' shape.

The picture projects the image with concave lines on the edges. I'll explain further: somehow the picture is distorted in a way that bends the four edges of the picture in a curved-concave manner so that...

Projection sets have two very common problems.

The first common problem is convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from the link below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

PT-61G63 Convergance

Your convergence IC's most likely need to be changed, possibly some resistors as well.
Do you know how to solder and use a meter? If so you may be able to fix this yourself for under $100. If not you will need to repairman to repair it, this should cost around $300-$500 Let me know if you want to repair it so i can get you going.

Convergence problem

The convergence ICs are located on the left board on a huge heatsink they should be STK392-110 or STK392-120. You can get replacement ICs at the following link and they also provide free step by step instructions on how to remove and install the new ICs.
