Map problem Hi there The problem I have with my street pilot 2610 is as follows: I bought an updated street map and a topo map for my gps. I tried to transfer is with the map install program and it stopped almost at the end with and error saying there was a xommunication problem and that I must restart my gps. I did that but the problem reappears everytime. I removed the gps from my pc and restrated it. I now also notice that my Map info icon is gone. Is the software on my gps corrupted and is there anyway I can reset it maybe to default settings or something like that? Thanks for the help.

There are two type of maps in the unit. There is the basemap which shows the states and major highway and roads and then there is the actual Mapsource maps which shows the streets. If you go to Mapinfo and it doesn't show anything, then Mapsource maps are missing.

With the 2610 you can use a card reader for the Compact Flash Memory card to load the maps. This is much faster since the card reader is USB 2.0 while the Garmin USB is 1.1 Under device look for the drive letter which correspond to the Campact Flash card.

Garmin Street Pilot. No upgrades available from Garmin. Can it be updated some other way?

Hi Steve,

The Street Pilot line was one of the first automotive GPS devices from Garmin, and has got to be 8+ years old. Garmin contracts with Navteq for map software. At one point, Garmin needed to have Navteq compress their new maps so that they wouldn't need to increase the amount of memory in the GPS units and still be able to include all the way points, and new features such as junction view, traffic receivers, text to speech voices, etc. These new maps have an "NT" descriptor in the title. "NT "stands for "New Technology". Non-NT maps are no longer produced.

The new Garmin GPS hardware had to included the ability to decompress maps "on the fly" for display on the screen. As a result, the NT maps will not work in the older Garmin devices.

Your best bet is to either use the Street Pilot - knowing that the routes may no longer provide accurate information, or purchase a New, Refurbished or Used GPS. Garmin offers "Lifetime Maps" as an option for nearly all NT capable GPS units either as a subscription after GPS purchase, or "in the box" when buying a Garmin GPS. You'll get FREE map updates for that GPS up to 4 times per year. This assures you of always having the most recent maps available in your GPS. Look for a model that has "LM" in it (ie: nuvi 1490LM). If it has a "T" in the model name (ie: nuvi 1490T), it has Lifetime Traffic. If it is listed as "LMT" (nuvi 1490LMT) it has both Lifetime Maps and Lifetime Traffic.

I hope helps!

POI DATA DOWNLOADING

Important note about maps: Due to our high volume of sales, every Garmin portable GPS navigator sold by Amazon.com will come with the most recent map version. The current map provides data through April 1, 2007. If you purchased a Garmin GPS before April 1, 2007, you can purchase a map update on SD card. We will notify customers who purchase from Amazon.com via e-mail whenever new map updates become available.

Can't view downloaded sections from Garmin Topo

In Map Setup page, scroll over to blue 'ball' icon (second from right), press lower left button on side of GPS unit, use Thumb switch to scroll down to "Show None", click Thumb switch in. All maps will disappear. Press lower left button on side of GPS unit again, scroll down to "Show Topo.....", click Thumb switch in. Your Topo maps should now show onscreen.

The reason your Topo map might not have shown is because, if you leave the Navigator map showing, and then just press "Show Topo", the layer showing Topo will still be under the Navigator map. This is why I always tell it to show none, and then load whatever map I need to see onto a bare screen.

If this solved your problem, please come back and rate our answer as this assists others. Thank you.

Topo maps a mess of meaningless lines

Sorry for late reply. You need to select an area on your topo map prior to downloading it. For example, if you plan to go to Algonquin Bice Lake (access point 4), then you need to select the map around the area (starting from) Kearney upto the Magnetawan Lake and beyond. Mark waypoints from the put-in to the campsite on Bice Lake (best to compare of the topo and Algonquin canoeing map). Then you can click Transfer, click Send to Device (GPS 76cs should appear) to download it. On the GPS, enter the Find Waypoint button and you should be able to see those waypoints. Good luck for your next trip.

Loading Topo maps...210 says invalid base map??

To get the base map and to get your unit functioning again:
Install the firmware again:

Go to: http://www.magellangps.com/support/product.asp?prodid=1114

Or, if this doesn´t work, go to www.magellangps.com, click on"support", click on "legacy products" (left) and click on "eXplorist210 Europe" (do NOT click on "eXplorist 210 North America")

On this page click under Updates/Upgrades on "version 2.57", and follow the instructions. You will have to register your GPS, register it under a European country.

After you have installed the firmware you will have the basemap and some new windows on the GPS. Good luck and enjoy!

2008 update for street pilot i3

When you say you are clicking on the map, are you just using your mouse pointer to click or have you actually selected the Map Select tool at the top of your Mapsource screen?

Street Pilot C340

The only way to update the maps is to purchase new maps from Garmin and download them via the computer. The 2008 map updates are currently available, and Garmin has told me new maps will be out in a few months.

POIs for Street Pilot 2610

Sometimes going to Garmin's web site can help answer questions like this. Garmin has discontinued the StreetPilot 2610, which means it has not been produced for some time. This is from the manual of the 2610/2650:

CD-ROM:
Accepts downloadable map detail from
Garmin PC-based MapSource® City
Navigator™ DVD (included), which
provides street-level detail, addresses,
listings of nearest restaurants, hotels,
ATMs and more. Note: Requires
CompactFlash® card (128 MB CF card included)2
