Sounds like it could be a blown head gasket betwen the cylinder and valves. The gasket is very thin in that area and is a common problem. Not a recommended fix for a novice. Best taken to a shop..... Dwain

My service light went on my tractor just after 25 hours of use.I put some oil in it. now I have a big cloud of grey smoke coming out of exhaust in front engine.

Your check engine/service light possibly came on to indicate a oil change due interval @ 25 hours.
Double check your engine oil level; it may be too full. If the oil level is over the full mark, drain off some of the oil in the engine so the crankcase oil level is between the add & full marks on the oil level dipstick. The grey smoke you're seeing is likely oil being burned off.
On a side note, I am assuming you replaced the engine oil with the same weight/viscosity oil that was previously in the engine or recommended by the manufacturer in your owner's manual.

White smoke comeing from front of engine on my 1042 cub cadet lawn tractor.

White smoke is typically an indicator of an oil leak. This could be a leak, broken ring, valve or piston problem etc. I would start with checking your filter to ensure oil has not leaked inside there. Next I would check the spark plugs for oil build up. Doesn't sound like it's getting to the exhaust.

Mowing keeps stalling and emitting clouds of white smoke

You probably either have too much oil in the engine or there is water in the fuel system.

My name is dave...i live in michigan..i have a snow blade hooked up to my craftman 1000 LT..20hp..my question is..should I use craftman 30sae motor oil during the winter months?

During the winter months where the temperature is frequently below freezing, most engine maunufacturers recommend to use a 10W30 SAE oil.
The thinner, multi-weight oil will allow your tractor to start easier in the colder temp. When the temps are higher, just go back to the 30W SAE oil.
Remember to always use a high quality oil. Lawn tractor engines use the same quality of oil as cars do, so get yourself some Pennzoil or Castrol or Havoline or whatever you normally use in your car.
Most lawn tractor engine use about 48 ounces to perform a complete oil change.

Good luck!

I have a craftman 42 inch silver lawn tractor and would like to change the oil what typpe do i use

Briggs & Stratton engines use 48 ounces of SAE 30 oil & Kolher engines use 2 quarts of 10w30 oi. Be sure not to over fill the engine will smoke like a banshee!! Verify the level with the dipstick. Oil can be gotten from Sears or from your favorite auto parts store.

I have a 20hp,Craftman lawn tractor, single cylinder, blue smoke from exhaust, gas in crankcase . lots of power , lots of smoke

If you keep running it in this condition, it will eventually seize up on you. You are going to need to rebuild the motor. Oil is getting by the ring on the piston. And gas is getting into the crankcase because it's being mixed with oil and not burning properly.

My advice would be to stop using it and get it fixed, before you cause even more damage.

Good Luck!

Craftman Lawn mower continues to burn oil at a fast rate

Are you getting a lot of smoke? If so the oil is getting past the rings and burning.

Smokes for short intervals then stops

Check your oil level. When oil level is excessively high that's a usual symptom. Drain any excess oil (in an adequate container) and problem will dissappear after a few minutes running. I hope you find this solution helpful. Please rate it and thanks for using Fixya. Good luck!

White smoke from my Craftmans tractor,

Use the lawnmower's oil dipstick to determine whether the oil level is correct. Maintain the correct level of oil. If you've overfilled the oil, open the drain plug, and drain some of the oil into a waste container.

Dispose of any excess oil properly. Burning off excess oil is undesirable. It can foul the mower's spark plug, piston rings, and other engine components and contributes to air pollution.

If your mower's engine has not been overfilled with oil, but still is smoking, it may have stuck or worn piston rings or another maintenance problem.
If it has sat over the winter, and didnt have stabilizer in it - it may be bad gas too. Drain it out, and put in fresh.
