Question about Dell Inspiron 8500 Notebook

Inspiron 8500 99% dead

Power up - power & charge light comes on, 3 lock lights flash, but display goes dark with stripey lines and slowly goes white over about 1 minute. Fan seems to switch on/off, but can't hear the HDD spin up. Same thing happens without HDD or DVD installed.

Did come to life once in 20 goes (without HDD in), some lines on the display which weren't on secondary display.

Maybe sounds power-ish but not sure.

Question is, should I replace Display board first (cheaper) or motherboard (more likely I think)

If I have to I'll replace both. I love this laptop, its awesome even 5 years on with its 1920x1200 display

Have already tried with external Monitor & switching. Given its not even spinning up the HDD, & the BIOS isn't loading, not surprising its not working. Probably not even getting to the point where it recognises the keyboard to switch to external screen.

I'd like to think its the display adapter (Dell P/no 2y068) cause its cheaper to fix, but I cant see how a faulty display adapter would stop the HDD from spinning up or the BIOS from loading.

Hi All, thanks for the advice. Have solved it, with a few hiccups & red herrings along the way. Heres the post mortem to help anyone else in the future.

In the end, the issue was the display board. However I didn't go for that initially. I bought a refurb motherboard as I was still spooked by the fact that the hard disk wouldn't spin up. Still seemed very power related to me. Anyway, got the new motherboard & swapped it over, same problem.

Resigned myself to the fact that it could only be the display adapto, so bought a refurb one of those. Powered on, BIOS display came up, yipee!

BUT - that was it - still no hard disk. To cut a long story short, when I tried to fix it more than 12 months ago, I put the hard disk into a chassis to recover the data. I forgot that in this machine, there is an extending connector between the HDD & the mother-board, which I forgot about when I put in the HDD. So it wasn't even connected!

Found the connector, plugged it in, & off it went. Good as new.

I thought I might as well keep the motherboard as a spare since I couldn't be bothered taking it all apart again. However, Noticed in getting it all updated, the battery light started to come on & then it powered down due to low battery. Funny, checked connector, & power pack in my other laptop, all good.

Another long story short, Refurb motherboard power supply stuffed. Organised to send back to supplier in US, no problem for a refund.

So all is well that ends well.....

My husband found the Dell support page that explains what the various blinking lights mean! In my case it was RAM that had become unseated...

http://www.support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/en/tree?c=us&l=en&s=gen&journalid=6CC40F5B6DB82D93E040AE0AB6E12EBE&treeid=0A1C2758D598CCD0E0401E0A55170715&Query=&SystemID=&ServiceTag=&contenttype=&os=&component=&lang=&doclang=&toggle=&dl=

You'll have to enter some data and go through the matrix. You'll need to check this box <The system is receiving power but does not POST. The power LED comes on or a Lock LED flash code is displayed.> And that will get you to the flash codes page.

My dell inspiron mini 10 won't boot. There is just a flash of white light then a flash of amber light when I press the power button. That's it, nothing else.

Remove the main battery and try again, also! the power adapter charger should be checked for correct voltage, if okay! pull one stick of ram and test, and the second piece not forgetting to put the first one back and power up, if all this fails you will need to get it assessed.

Screen black. Power light on unit flashes red slowly. Power light on switching adaptor power supply flashed green slowly.

Sounds like the battery might be low which would cause the red flashing light and dark screen. Let it charge for a little bit then try turning it on again. If it still does it with the power supply plugged in, make sure there isn't a lens cover on it, and switch modes or try getting into the menu to see if you can get anything to come up. If that still doesn't work then it sounds like there might be a problem with the camera.

The user manual will supply an in-depth explanation of the led-indicators, aswell as there are normally small icons assigned to each light, sometimes engraved in the plastics, normal lights to be active at average usage are the Power led indicator, will glow as long as device is turned on, the Wireless led indicator will glow when the wireless network module is active, the CPU led indicator will flash occasionally when system is idle, and rapidly when system is active under load, and the Battery led indicator will be active when device is running on battery power. My dell inspiron laptop 1000 screen turns dark every few seconds. if I close the computer half way and open it,it stay bright for a few seconds and turns dark again

This is your back light on your lcd display, To prove that have a flash light handy when it goes dark point the flash light at the screen and you should see the screen and that would mean right there you got a back light going out or the inverter that powers it is going bad. Etherway if this is not your area of work you need to tech it to a computer tech local to have it repaired.

Thanks for being considerate with your ratings and feedback today.

If the charge light shows a blinking amber, then the battery is dead. If the charge light shows a solid amber, then it's charging.

Inspiron 1100 will not boot up-suspect power problem

I would hook it to an external monitor first to see if the screen is blown.
If it comes on, keep pushing F12 to get the diagnostic screen.
Run a complete test, it will give you error numbers.

No Sound out of my speakers

The last Kenwood that I had witnessed with a flashing power light was defective. It also caused the subwoofers to move slowly back and forth. More than likely, you have an internal issue with the amp. Call Kenwood, and see how much they would charge to have you send the amp in for repair. Or pick up a new amp.
