Took the back panel and turned the fridge back on... the fan tried to start but came to a halt before completing one revolution.  So i hit the fan balde a dink with the screw driver and away she went.

Problem solved... for now at least.  Probably need a new fan motor?

    Thanks a million... i owe u a pint!

Front black area of the fridge was very hot. Opened back pannel and fan was stopped. I bent the blade slightly back and it spun free again.

Be Carefull the tubes coming out of the compressor are very very hot. I burned the back of my hand.

I let the compressor cool to touch. Restarted fridge and within a few minutes it was fairly hot again. Seems like the fidge is staying cool so far.

    Is this normal?

The condensor fan motor has failed. For now remove the back panel of the refrig and make sure that the blade hasnt fallen off the motor. If the motor is bad put  a fan back there so the compressor wont fail next.

Insulation does not melt - gaskets may be affected by hot temps.

Your condenser coils may be located on sides of fridge. If so the unit will be warm to the touch on the outside.

Door frame warm

Nearly all modern fridges are self defrosting. Additionally, some models offer the option to minimize moisture on the cabinet. To do both the defrosting and controlling moisture build up, small heaters are used. Defrost heaters are located in the freezer compartment.

Typically, the other heaters are installed in the frame on the front of the fridge cabinet, near the freezer opening. This is where sub-freezing cold air would escape and contact the warmer (room temperature) outer cabinet. This causes condensation much the same way a glass of cold water "sweats" sitting on a counter or table. The warmer and more humid the room is, the more quickly the condensation will form. The heater is used to quickly evaporate any moisture that collects on the cabinet. This heater is operated at the same time as the defrost heater, and they are turned on by a timer, 2 or 3 times a day for about 20 to 30 minutes each time. When they are powered, it is expected that the cabinet will be warm to the touch. You may smell plastic, as the door seals adjacent to and in contact with the heated parts of the freezer opening are warmed, and is normal - particularly if new. The heaters should never be hot to the touch nor should smoke be seen.

I hope this helps!

Maytag msd2454gr back in Oct of 2010 I had my start relay kit replaced part #12002784. Since then I have had an accumulation of ice build-up on the bottom floor of the feezer. On numberous occations I have...

is everything running fine except for the blocked drain?just melting out the ice isn't good enough, you have to clear the block in the drain.i use a steemer to blow out the drain but if you don't have one you can try a turkey baster to blow through the drain, when you think the drain is clear get hot water and pour it into the hole,if it drains down the hole then you know it's clear.heat it up with the hair dryer, then stick the baster into the hole with some hot water in it and squeeze the top to push the water through the hole, then check it by pouring hot water down the drain hole,if it drains down the hole you're if the fridge is warm and freezer is getting warm too then you also have a defrost problem, bad defrost thermostat, heater, or timer.if you pull off the back inside wall of the freezer again but first open the fridge door,up in the top panel where the controls are and on the right side you'll see a hole, the defrost timer is there,if you turn it with a screw driver slowly, you'll hear the evap fan shut off and by doing this you manually advanced it into defrost, now when you look at the evap. coil there's a heater, you have a calrod heater in your machine,it's a black rod that heats up and melts the ice off of the coil when in defrost,if that doesn't heat up you need to replace it,that also comes with the thermostat connected to it part number 61006116 and it's around 50 dollars.but this is only if your machine isn't staying cold enough and you have to keep melting the ice off of the coil by hand,if not then all you have to do is clear the drain.hope this helps you out, sorry for your loss, hang in there hopefully things will get better for you.

The sides of my freezer are very hot while the top, front and back are cool to the touch. The freezer still is freezing items fine.

In the newer freezers and refrigerators they are mounting the condenser coil in the side panels of the freezer or refrigerator eliminating the large usually black frame work of tubing that used to be mounted on the back. This saves room but causes the sides to be warm as the heat is now dissipated by the side panels. You should have about an inch of clearance on both sides to let air flow over the side panels to cool them. I have a newer side by side and it also is feels quite warm when you put your hand on the side.

Front metal , top heating element very hot

This should be OK. There are heat strips placed behind the door frame to prevent sweating around the door frame due to the metal being cold normally without the strips. Thanks, Sea Breeze

Panel between fridge and freezer very hot and no sound at all

Hi: Its just a coincidence you noticed it then. It is usually hot. It's the reverse side of the refrigerant (the hot side.) If you lived in a humid area the fridge would sweat. Water would run down between the doors. I live in a dry climate so no worries. Older fridges used an electric heating element to keep them dry. They also had an energy saver switch to turn it off. As Whirlpool uses the hot side of the refrigerant they don't use additional power to run the heater. Actually the heater is called a mullion heater. Nothing is wrong with your fridge. I'll look over my shoulder for angry retailers. Hope this helps, Jeff.

There is an electric heater in the center which is called a mullion heater. If you have an energy saver switch on your model turn it to the saving position.

Intermittent Warming on GE side by side

The most common cause of this with a GE fridge is the defrost heating element is burned out.
Empty the freezer, take out the shelves and remove the back wall. You will see the heater at the bottom of the evaporator coil. It is a glass tube with a heating element inside it. Some models have two heaters, some have one. If either one looks black inside the glass it is probably burned out. You can check them with an ohm meter. If you don't have a meter, take the heater to an appliance parts dealer and they will check it for you. If yours has two heaters, they must be replaced as a set.
If the heater is not your problem, post the complete model number from the fridge and I will try to walk you through the defrost system checks.
