Please Help! My Laptop keeps freezing

I have a Dell Latitude D600 Laptop. It had a very bad virus which couldn't be removed by any method except a total format of the Hard drive. Now while I'm re-installing windows xp home edition it gets to a certain point then toaly freezes. The Thing just goes dead. It's always when setup is copying files to the windows instalation folder. I've left it all day and it's just dead. What's up with this thing??

If it is a bad virus that won't let you do anything on the computer, follow the instructions on this link. Mbam will remove the virus that won't let you install programs and then MSE will clean your computer completely.

Restore dell d600 to factory settings

Resetting a Dell Latitude to the factory settings allows the user to restore the Dell Latitude to the original operating condition as if it was just taken out of the box. Dell system includes a restore utility called 'Dell Symantec System Restore' to reset or restore your Dell system to factory setting.

Step 1: Before reset any Dell Latitude laptop, backup your all important data and programs, otherwise you may lose it. It is recommended to use an external storage device for your entire data backup, so that you couldn't lose it in any sudden occurring issue...

Step 2: Remove any other unnecessary external drive and restart your Dell Latitude laptop.

Step 3: Press 'F8' key continue until 'Advanced Boot Options' wouldn't be appear.

Step 4: Use your keyboard arrow key to select 'Repair Your Computer' from the list and hit 'Enter'.

Step 5: Now click 'Next' and login as the administrator account.

Step 6: Click 'Dell Factory Image Recovery and Data Safe options', select your language option and click 'Next'.

Step 7: Click the check box 'Yes, reformat hard drive and restore system software to factory condition' and click 'Next' to start Dell Latitude reset process...

This process will erase all your previous changes that have been made to the Dell Latitude laptop and reset the configuration settings to factory setting.

Virus

Don't reformat it just yet. Tell us what OS you are using, and I can try to help.
I will assume you are using WIndows XP or Vista - what you can do, assuming you have kept your PC up-to-date, is try to run the inbuilt Microsoft anti-malware program.
Click Start, Run, type MRT and press Enter or click OK.
You should get the February 2009 version of the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool.
Do a quick scan and see what comes up. If anything is found, reboot and repeat the process doing a full scan (can take several hours).
That should fix and remove the most common virus infections. Let me know how you get on.

If you still need to reformat, you need to use the Dell recovery CDs that came with your laptop. These were a blue recovery/drivers CD and a purple CD for Windows XP sp1 or a green CD for Windows XP sp2. Not sure about other versions of Windows. There is no magic button to reformat with Dell laptops.
