Question about Craftsman 25cc Gas Line Trimmer

1 Answer

I have a craftsman 25 cc string trimmer with fuel problems. After winter, ran tank of good fuel through it and it worked fine. Added fuel (unknowingly with water in it) and it ran on a slow idle and finally died. Drained fuel, took carb apart and cleaned, blowed out carb and reassembled. Still only ran on a slow idle - no throttle response. Took cover off with air cleaner and it ran fine. Seems to blow too much fuel out where filter sits. Put filter back on and runs on slow idle. Almost seems it is flooding, but have not adjusted anything, just cleaned. What do I need to do next?

there was a difference when I removed the air filter. It actually ran like it should, but when I put the filter back on, the filter filled with fuel and it really killed the throttle response. Will replace filter tomorrow to see if it works. Thanks for all your help. Will let you know how it goes.

You shouldn't notice a difference if you remove the air filter. So I would replace it. Also if you are using compressed air to clean or blow-out the carb. Be careful, its not recommended and could make it worse.

Yes, I have a Craftsman 25 cc Gas Trimmer and we just snapped the starter cord. Do you have to open up the head to fix this? Does it need a special type of cord?

Yes you have to remove the plastic recoil assembly and install a certain size cord. We use a #3 or 3.5 cord on all our string trimmers, blowers with that size engine.

Can you recomend a cleaner i can add to the gas tank to clean fuel system on a craftsman 25-cc trimmer

Any petroleum based cleaner added to the fuel will dilute the gas/oil mixture, thinning it and possibly not allowing enough lubrication during operation; if this is a 2-stroke engine. This is not recommended. Removing the carburetor and cleaning it is usually the best and accepted way to go.
You can do this on a 4-stroke engine and there are many, many choices for fuel system cleaners available for these. You just pour the cleaner into the fuel tank and run it. If this is a 4-stroke, then check for cleaners at your local auto parts store.

The Craftsman Sim-Pul string trimmer starts and runs for one sec.

The larger line is the fuel return line from the purge bulb and should have the nylon connector (funnel thing) on it holding it in place inside the tank so the line won't pull out.The smaller diameter fuel tank line goes from the tank to the lower pipe fitting on the carburetor (fuel intake line). This line has a weighted fuel filter inside the tank on it.
New fuel lines are recommended every so often as the ethanol added to our gas nowadays wreaks havoc on the lines and carburetor as well. Get new lines...cut them long....feed them thru holes in fuel tank...grab with tweezers or needle-nose pliars....put on either the fuel filter or the nylon retaining nipple and pull the one with nipple down to bottom of tank...one with fuel filter can stay long to help draw fuel in the tank (yes, it moves around and is supposed to).

32 cc string trimmer will not run

It sounds like you need to adjust the fuel mixture screw in the carb. To do this, while it is running adjust the screw in either direction until it runs properly without the choke.

My string trimmer will not start

Possible solutions:
-Kill switch is shorted out-check the wire and connections.
-Buy a new plug.
-Primer bulb needs to be replaced.
-Fuel filter needs to be replaced, and it's located inside the gas tank so it's a bit tricky to replace.
-Try starting it without the air filter attached.

Is it possible an incorrect mix of gas/oil was used (or straight gas) which in turn ruined the motor?

Probably fuel line into tank has hole in it, If over 5 years old these fuel lines become brittle and break easy. Go to local hardware or repair shop that has small engine parts and you should find the fuel lines. Be sure to take sample with you as there are many sizes. If you have trouble installing them get back to me. Be sure you know how the lines are routed before removing.

Try checking the fuel filter, not sure of the exact location but should not be to hard to find. Try looking in the gas tank if it's not readily located. If small 2 cycle engines sit for any length of time ( 30 days or so) with fuel in them the filters can become clogged. If your not going to use it for extended periods or storing it for the winter make sure you drain the fuel tank and run the carburetor dry.
