Thanks a lot for the reply. It is 14 years old and not under warranty. I carefully removed the top cover and face. The display unit is a rounded white plastic piece with the flat black display on the front. I'm not sure what would need replacing. Is there a light inside that might need replacing?

  • coldmark May 14, 2009

It doesn't appear possible to get inside this LCD module to get to a bulb.

Display lights our out on my Yamaha RX-770 receiver. When I shine a flash light at the display I can barely make it out. I opened it up and the lcd unit is a rounded plastic piece with the flat black display. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this short of replacing the whole lcd unit? It is 15 years old and sounds great, but not worth pumping $90 into. Thanks!

Thanks voodoo. I have a svc manual but it shows the lcd unit as one piece, so I assume that means it was not intended to be serviced, but rather the whole lcd unit should be replace. I was hoping it was just a bulb I could get at. If the display doesn't work anyway, maybe I'll remove it and see if I can get into it. Can't hurt anything anyway. Thanks! -Marko.

Hi coldmark,

90 bucks sound pretty not-practical for the 15 year-old receiver, but if the sound is worth it i guess sparing 50 bucks or less will do the job.

if you are willing to buy an online service manual for this rig, it will show you what to replace and how to have the small LED / bulb replaced for a little about 11$.

hope this helps...

    hi marko

    thanks for replying.

i have gone through the manual also and you are correct, it is one complete assembly, usually parts like this when replaced will also be as a whole assembly.

as your plan, you may give it a shot, just let us know what comes out afterwards,

    regards.

The backlight on the display is either failing or not getting enough power. You will have to disassemble the unit to fix this. If it is under warranty, I would advise using it. If not, then replacing the light itself is the easier and most likely problem occurring. Let me know if you have any further questions. Opening it up requires removing all of the outer screws holding on the outer panel.

yes the backlight that would help light the display would need replacing. On a unit this old, you may be better off getting a new unit as other parts will probably start to fail as time goes on.

Well then you will have to end up replacing the whole display unit which is really not worth it. Again, you are better off getting a newer system. Let me know if you need anything else.

The receiver works great but there are no longer any lights on the front. We checked the manual and can not see where there is a fuse or light bulb to change help

If on the front display it is either missing a voltage source (connection or bad part) or the display itself is bad.

Yamaha RX-770 Receiver display quit

there is a bulb inside the backlight on the lcd display.it is 12 volt and alot of manufacturers run it from the +- 15 volt preamp power supply,on the plus rail.when the bulb burns out it can activate the dc speaker protect,or some other 12 or 15 volt circuit..if it is a flourescent display that is a different problem.those run on 5 12 18 and -32 volts.there is also a 6 volt ac filament voltage.you need the schematic.

Display panel does not light; sound is ok

It may not need repair. if you have it hooked up to a TV, by video, s-video, or component. Press the menu button on the remote and you can see the main menu of the unit on the TV. Navigate the menu up/down/left/right/enter until you get to "display". You should be able to turn the display of the receiver on/off. If you don't have the manual. http://www.yamaha.com/yamahavgn/Documents/YEC/Stereo_Receivers/Manual/RX-797_e_U_p.pdf That's the PDF from Yamaha. I haven't used this particular unit, but that's the way it's done on all the other series. ie. RX-V or RX-Z. Hope this helps

The display light doesn't come on to indicate what the unit is doing (frequency, mode, etc.)

I assume that it plays, you just can't see the display. It may just need a new display bulb, that back lights the display.

No display info on receiver

Try plugging a video monitor AKA your TV into that monitor output connector on the rear of the yamaha.
Select video in on the TV and see if anything shows up from the yamaha

Sounds though like the receiver has serious issues. If you can get your moeny back , do so

Display is permanently "off" on the Yamaha RX-V620

Sounds like the LED that lights up the display has burnt out. An easy fix, if you're not afraid to take the front panel apart and resolder a new one.

RX-V1500- front panel lights not working

The display on an amp has two components.
A small Lamp (light bulb)
A LCD display with a color filter.
Normally when the display goes out the problem is with the lamp
The lamp on my RXV 870 died after about 9 years of use.
I called Yamaha and was able to by a replacement.
The lamp is an odd voltage 14.5 if I recall.

Looking at the receipt i should have bought 3 for the cost of shipping. It cost about 10.00 cnd,
