The rubber has mildew on it and it smells, I have to leave the door open after I do the wash to let air dry it out. I have also been using bleach to clean the rubber ring.

You may find it hard to believe, but most newer front load washers have this problem after being in use for a while. Mine is a GE, and they have the worst reputation according to owner forums.

So here's the fix:

First, I assume you know that little pieces of stuff build up under that rubber ring at the bottom. You need to clean that out with 50% bleach and 50% water. Occasionally it doesn't hurt to run a quick wash without detergent through the machine empty. Add bleach liberally to the water. After it is done, leave the door open a crack to allow it to dry.

It's the nature of the beast!

I had the same problem, and I fixed it very easily. I switched to powdered detergent. I have completely stopped using liquid detergent, and the problem has vanished!! Give it a try. I used Tide HE powder.

Typically the smell is actually from the inside of the unit which you can not reach physically with out serious time invested.

The smell typically is the tub internal as water is never actually completely out of the unit and it will build up over time, within the tub as well as in the water since the coin trap with in the tub to drain connector will build up with hair detergent and fabric softener.

2 steps can be taken:

1) open the service panel in the rear of the unit, down at the bottom there is the tubing that comes off the tub facing straight down, going to the drain and to pressure sensor switch.
Open and clean. Make sure to match up arrow on tubing with tub. tighten tightly as the movement while washing may cause this to come off if not tightened enough.

2) Start unit in a normal or sanitary allow to fill with water and start to agitate. (No clothes) Open soap dispenser and pour 2 cups of "Distilled White Vinegar" allow to run through full cycle. Once completed open door to air out and wipe down rubber boot seal. Repeat 2x monthly for first month. then 1x per month therefore after. This will break down detergent and sediment on outer tub.

Hope this helps.

I agree with Bboyabs. I cleaned the seal, ran it through a wash with bleach only, and switched from liquid to powder detergent which I think helped the most. The clothes smell fresh again.

We've had our HE 2 plus washer for a couple years, and we have started to smell a slight mildew odor. Is there a trap someplace that needs to be cleaned, or something else I need to be looking for?

You need to use some bleach and clean the washer out. I also wipe the rubber around the door opening and leave the door open airing out the machine. The rubber gasket will grow black mold.

I have an older front loading washer Frigidaire and it's now smelling like mold on all our clothes thought it was me leaving clothes in to long but it's not. model #FWT445GES2 serial #XC74463636 . I have...

No recall, Pour 2 cups of bleach into the washer, Wash on HOT water, long cycle. Then wipe seal with dry cloth. This will eliminate the mold smell... To stop it from coming back ALL front load washer doors MUST be left open to allow the rubber seal to dry, Just like you close your shower curtain so it doesn't get musty smelling... 2 hours is about the dry time... wiping the seal with a cloth usually helps too... All located in your owners manual/

One downfall of the front load machine that it holds moisture causing musty smell in drum. Try leaving door agar between washes and use a cleaner specific for front load smells 1 every month.

Mold & Smelly in Washer

Thanks for your suggestion about looking in the lip of the seal. I found one of my three year old granddaughters socks. Also, the seal for very dirty so I mixed a 50% solution and 50% solution of chlorox and used an old towel rag to wipe and wash throughly around the lip seal.

I noted that the aluminum ring inside the washer had also accumulated a lot of dirt. With one hand and fingers I held the wet cholorx towel inside the ring and with the other hand spun the tub around several turns until I had removed all the dirt and grime.

It did have a moldy smell. I'll let you know if this fixed the problem.

Rubber Seal Holds Mold!

This is a problem that seems to show up on almost every front-loading washer due to the design of the rubber boot that attaches to the front of the machine. It is extremely important to wipe down the rubber after usage but even this doesn't always help. There are a couple of products out there that claim to get rid of the mold and smell, something called Purewasher that you could look up on www.smellywasher.com and also something that whirlpool sells for this purpose.

Mold & Smelly in Washer

Shepherd, Finkelman, Miller & Shah, LLC, is currently investigating defects and other problems in certain front-loading washing machines manufactured and/or sold by Whirlpool, Kenmore, and LG Electronics, including Kenmore Elite HE3 front load washers, Whirlpool Duet front load washers and LG Tromm, LG XL and other LG model front load washers, which result in the growth of mold/mildew in the machines and which can cause the staining of clothes and other problems.

On August 29, 2007, SFMS filed a Complaint against Sears Holding Corp. involving its Kenmore HE, HE2, HE3, HE4, HE5 and other front-loading automatic washers. If you own a front-loading washing machine that is manufactured by any of the above-mentioned companies and are experiencing the growth of mold/mildew in the machine, visit the following website: www.frontloadwasherclassaction.com

Kenmore washer smells/mildew on rubber

The smell problem is actually because of the softener....its nassssty stuff it coats the interior of the washer and forms a grease like residue. I would use Washer Magic (available at all appliance parts retailers) (only half the container in front loaders) and a hot wash. Also keep spraying the boot with bleach and water soluiton every few hours it will dissappear after awhile. please rate my help
