Double click on the speaker and make sure that the mic does not have the mute box with an x in it.

I am pretty certain you have a card in your computer for it mentions a 7.1 speaker system.
If you put your service code in to do a search for drivers you will get the correct ones for your particular machine. Download install and reboot.
If you are not using six speakers and one sub woofer then the pink one in the back is the mic

I went to dell and looked up your model number and it said you had 7.1 integrated speakers system...so you don't- what do you have, perhaps if you share that bit of information we can help you better.
If you are showing no device installed and you have no sound card that would mean you sound is integrated and that would mean the component is there just not recognized because someone didn't pick the and download the correct driver...Which I mentioned before if you put your service code in on the dell site they would tell you exactly which of the three drivers you need.
    Thank you for the rating....

The solution for VISTA was to go in and delete all of the associated drivers. Go to control panel>System and Maintenance>Device Manager>Sound and Video Game Controllers> Then uninstall all the drivers in this category including the Blue Tooth Hands Free Audio and Blue Tooth Stereo Audio and the High Definition Audio Device.

Next plug microphone into front jack of the Dell XPS 420.

Next restart computer while connected to internet. In my case the drivers were properly loaded and the microphone worked for the first time in 4 years.

Good luck

If the problem continues to reappear it is also possible your computer has a virus called zero access. To determine this download "Malwarebytes" and scan your computer.

Mic not working since Windows 8 upgrade

Hi,
When you were on Windows 7/Vista and you clicked on the installer, then it checked the devices, did it say that the device is not gonna work? Did you check the report for programs that may not work?
Try going to the manufucator's website and downloading the latest drivers. If you have upgraded to Windows 8 from Xp, then many things might not work as expected.

Hope that this answers your question.

Xps 420 say's no audio device installed

it means that there is no audio drivers installed so you need to download the audio driver from www.dell.com/support or if it came with a utility cd you can get the drivers from it by just sloting in the cd and then you follow the interactive instructions.

Sound is ok i hv mic problem

If you install the correct drivers, the audio device should work fine. That includes the microphone if present. Check your sound recording settings in Vista to make sure all the device selections, recording levels etc. are set okay.
Then try recording with the Vista sound recorder to verify.

The Internal Mic In My Dell Inspiron 1525 Isnt Picking Up Sound??

You need to set the internal mic as the default input device. To check this Right click on the sound icon next to the time and select Recording properties. In the Recording properties right click on Arrey Microphone and select set as default. If this does not help. Uninstall and reinstall the sound drivers. To uninstall the sound drivers click on start and type DEVICE. Open device manager from the results and then look for sound devices. Click on the Plus sign next to Saound and audio devices. Right click on the SigmaTel entry there and select uninstall. Put a check on remove this driver from the computer. Once done restart the computer and go to support.dell.com and click on Drivers and Downloads. Enter your system service tag and download the Sigmatel audio drivers and install them. Check if the MIC works after the restart. If the Arrey microphone is set as the default and you have uninstalled and resinstalled the drivers and it does not work in MSN try recording with the Windows sound recorder and see if it works there. To open the sound recorder click on start and type SOUND. Open sound recorder from the results. Incase the mic does not record even in the recorder it could be bad or have a loose connection. If in warranty call/chat with the Dell technical support. If the warranty has expired consult a local computer guy.

Dell Inspirion 1521 Laptop Microphone Wont Work

checklist:
1. sound driver 2. microphone settings in volume control applet 3. tap test (tap the area around the microphone and see if eg Sound Recorder picks it up) 4. external microphone
If you get to step 4 before you get anything then your problem is one of missing or damaged microphone.
