    thanks for your feedback, sphynkter.

i have been able to control the actions taken when i insert a cd through windows xp solution 1 & 2.

but my problem is that when windows media player 11 is already an opened tab the cd automatically plays.

i don't want this to happen.

can i stop the opened player from automatically playing the cd?

i want to rip the cd into my library but i don't wanna listen to it at the same time. either i'm listening to something else or doing some work. i guess i'll just have to hit the stop button every time.

    thanks again for your help!

Any OS

  • If you hold down the Shift key when inserting the CD, the autorun is bypassed. (although it's not exactly graceful trying to insert a CD while holding down keys on the keyboard.)
Windows XP - Solution 1
  • Right-click on the drive icon for your CD drive, CD recorder, or DVD drive, and select Properties.
  • Choose the AutoPlay tab, and choose the desired action for each type of CD. For example, choose Music CD, then click Select an action to perform, then select Take no action.
Windows XP - Solution 2
  • Obtain and install TweakUI (part of the PowerToys for Windows XP package), and then start TweakUI.
  • Expand the My Computer branch, then the AutoPlay branch, and then select Drives.
  • Turn off the checkbox next to each drive letter for which you want AutoPlay disabled.
Windows 2000/XP
  • Run the Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE).
  • Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesCdrom.
  • Double-click the Autorun value, and type 0 for its value. (If it's not there, create it by selecting Edit -> New -> DWORD Value, and typing "Autorun" for its name.)
  • You may have to log out and then log back in for this change to take effect.
  • Note: With this solution, Windows will no longer be notified when you insert a new CD. To make sure the correct icon and title for the current CD are displayed in My Computer and Explorer, press F5 to refresh the window.

what version of media player are you using?

Ok, I've searched and searched, and I've come to the realization that the option to have WMP ignore an audio CD when inserted when WMP is already open is not possible using any supportable options or configurations. I went pretty far into the registry and tried a few things, but WMP would not stop playing CDs when inserted AND WMP was already open. Sorry, I don't have an answer for this one. Just out of curiosity, what scenario do you have where you have WMP open already, and you insert a music CD, but you don't want it to play?

This isn't a solution as much as a workaround. Open MP, start playing a song from your hard drive and then hit pause. As long as the song is playing or paused any CDs you insert will not start automatically playing.

Why won't my Acer laptop play compact discs?

Most units are designed to "autoplay" audio CDs when they are inserted. When they fail to do so, it could be because the CD is dirty or scratched and was bot recognized, the media player that you are using to play the CD was not in a state that it could autoplay the CD, or there could be a problem with the Disk drive or PC itself. Whenever a CD fails to play upon insertion, go to the "My Computer" icon (win7 or below) and see if the CD/DVD drive shows a disk inserted. If so, clicking on the drive will often start the playback.

Optical drive D: repair in windows 8.1

Sounds like Autoplay is not configured. You can see how to change your Autoplay settings on Microsoft's web site here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/change-autoplay-settings#1TC=windows-7. Autoplay is a strange duck, doesn't always work regardless of settings. You can also open 'computer', which in Windows 81 shows as your User Name, not 'Computer' or 'My Computer' like older versions, then right-click Drive: D, and click 'Play with VLC Media Player', which is the best player I believe - I've used it for years.

I sync with my mp3 player on computer it loads then i press play on mp3 player no music but vol is on i save my music from cd straight to windows media player then sync with mp3 player

if its right you just copy the shortcut of the music from your cd to your windows media player, meaning you cannot play that song in the media player if the cd is not inserted, you have to rip first the cd to your pc then put it in your mp3. Also make sure that you rip it in the right format that your mp3 can play, media player automatically rip the music as wma not mp3, make sure your mp3 player can play wma.

DVD will not play, windows media player XP, when inserted in player. CDs play automatically but DVD does not.

Uninstall the media player, goto windows Market place and install windows media 11. its free and has all the new updates. Providing you have the correct system requirements. If not you can reinstall your old version at the same site and will probably have the required updates anyway.
