Completely remove avg and re-install 8.5 see if that fixes the issue. Speed almost always has something to do with how much Ram you're running. Check your cashe' to be sure it's set high enough. Many anti virus programs are very comsuming of memory.

Good Luck

100% cpu usage

In Task Manager, go to the Processes tab and sort by the CPU column. See what is hogging up all your CPU. It may be a virus, if so, I recommend downloading Malware Bytes and doing a full scan. Warning, it could take several hours to scan depending on the size of your machine. Good luck!

My Dell Latitude D620 is constantly spiking at 100% cpu, the problem arises especially when running the mouse over any program, it basically locks down my whole computer and nothing will run, it always...

It sounds like there could be a virus on your computer that is using up all of your CPU resources. Try to monitor the processes and CPU usage, buy pushing Ctrl + Alt + Del at the same time. This will open up the Task Manager on XP, or show you a menu screen on Windows Vista and 7, and you can click on start task manager at the bottom. View all your processes and how much cpu usage is being taken up from those processes. Look for the process using the highest cpu usage when it spikes to 100% and please repost the process name!

In the mean time might I suggest running and anti-virus scan, scanning for malware, and spyware as well. If you do not have any of these programs, I would suggest using either AVG, or Avira Anti-Virus, Malwarebytes, and Super Anti-Spyware, all of which are free programs that can be downloaded here!

Copy and paste the links into your browsers address bar...

Malwarebytes-- http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/

Computer suddenly slow!

There could be a number of things that is slowing your computer down and it depends upon what is running on the computer and in the background.
For example. Someone could have hack into your computer, assuming you are on an unsecured wireless conection. A virus program is using or accessing data on your computer. Your virus program is running a scan on the computer. If you are on the Internet and the service is slow because of the amount of traffic through your ISP's connection.

The way to monitor what is going on is to run Windows Task Manager.
Press Ctrl-Alt-Del keys together to open Windows Task Manager.
There are 5 Tabs that view various functions. The Processes and the Performance tab give you details of what is going on.
In the Performance tab if the CPU is running nearly 100% that is why your computer appears slow.
In the Application tab, this shows which programs are opened and running, the more applications that are opened can make the computer slower.
In the Processes tab this shows exactly which process is running and who or what is using that process and the CPU usage. Click on the CPU label twice and it will sort the CPU usage from the highest to the lowest. You maybe able to determine the process which is causing the problem and work out if you can shut down this process/program or it is a problem that needs to be resolved.

I suggest that if you are using a wireless connection that it should be secured to prevent unauthorized access. Install a firewall and anti-virus program. Scan the computer for viruses and trojan horse programs etc.
