Was givin a used unit and want to reset it to factory default

To reset BIOS to factory default settings, press "F10" during the POST section and then press "F5" to reinstall factory BIOS settings, Save the new settings and reboot.
To recover to a clean install of the Operating System you will need a set of Recovery Disks. If you do not have them, and the machine will load Windows successfully then you should be able to create them from the "HP Backup & Recovery Manager" although whether this will return to factory default or simply create disks for recovery to its current state I am not sure. Alternatively I understand you can get Recovery Disks from HP, although whether still available for this model - I don't know. Hope this helps.

Hello I have a HP Pavilion a1320N it is running very slow, so I want to do a full recovery back to the original state, but I did not create a set up disks when I bought it. How can I do a full recovery?

Use an external hard drive to backup your files and do the recovery... or better use the System Restore utility to at least restore it to an old backup date.

I just purchased a Pavilion dv7 4165 lap top.I was told I should create a back- up disk for the system in case the computer encounters a virus and I have to dump everything.I was told it would take around...

Linda, press the Windows key and type recovery. The disks are not really backup, per sa. The disks are needed in case your hard drive fails. The system disks are shipped in a D:\ drive, fine if the drive works, but not helpful if the drive itself fails.

If you do not find the recovery disk program, look in accessories and system tools.

If you still cannot find it, go to and look under support. HP has free support and they can help you.

Hp Support ---->Link.
or :
Cause 1 This issue may occur if you have a CD, a DVD or a floppy disk in your CD, DVD, or floppy drive when you start the computer. Cause 2 This issue occurs if one or more of the following elements are corrupted and will not load during the boot sequence of the computer:
  • Master boot record
  • Partition tables
  • Boot sector
  • NTLDR file

Method 1: Troubleshoot the specific element that causes Windows not to loadNote This option requires that you perform multiple steps to determine the exact element that causes the issue. This option may allow for you to keep customizations in Windows.
  1. Restart your computer in safe mode. To do this, press the F8 key while Windows is starting. Then, create a Windows XP boot disk to start the computer.

For more information about how to create a Windows XP boot disk, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 305595 ( ) How to create a bootable floppy disk for an NTFS or FAT partition in Windows XP 315222 ( ) A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XP If you can start the computer from the boot disk without receiving an error message, the damage is limited to the master boot record, the boot sector, or the NTLDR file. After Windows XP is running, immediately back up all data before you try to fix the boot sector.

Use Disk Management to view the partition information and to verify that the disk partition (or partitions) is correct. To use Disk Management, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Manage.
    2. Expand Storage, and then click Disk Management.
If invalid partitions are present or you cannot start your computer by using a boot disk, consider reinstalling Windows XP on your computer and restoring your data and configuration information from a recent backup.

If you do not have a current backup copy of the data on the computer, contact a computer specialist to determine the best method of data recovery and configuration.
  2. Run a current virus scanning program to verify that no virus is present.
  3. Repair the master boot record by using the FIXMBR command from the Windows XP Recovery Console.

Send me the steps that should be follow to get another set of recovery dvd'S FOR hp laptop with vista operating systems

HP laptops have a space set-aside for back-up and recovery. Your HP should allow you to create a set of back-up DVD's for your compute.

Go to "help and support" and query recovery disks.

Also, check if you have a recovery drive (drive "d")

Should you need to recover you HP laptop be sure to backup all you essential files (music, photos, documents, downloads etc.) No need to save the programs you have on disk and/or download. Just prepare for a lot of work.

I just did it on my wife's HP laptop with Vista and now she has a "new" computer.

New DVD w/message the DVD is not blank!!

I have a new HP Pavilion Ultimate - d49967 - Desktop PC. The program is HPs "Create backup copies of your files/folders."

When I try to format the disk the dialog box does not appear to allow choices. I then tried to use the disk and that is when I was told the "disk is not blank." I purchased the package containing the disks yesterday and opened the package today.

Thank you for your help. Silly Clown
