Question about SimpleTech 250GB USB2.0 7200 RPM External 250 GB IDE Hard Drive

1 Answer

I had to replace my hard drive, I did not have a recovery disk and HP can't get me one. Anyway I loaded my operating system and at least my computer works again except my speakers do not work. How do I find out if this is the only driver I am missing? And how do I correct the problem?

In XP you can simply check the Device Manager and see if there are any devices in error or listed as Unknown. In most cases you will need to install or update the driver for those devices.

Emachines screen says no bootable device insert boot disk. I have no boot disk

This error indicates that the system is not able to find a boot-able device to load the Operating System. It could be something as simple as a disconnected hard drive, or it could even be a corrupt hard drive.

You can check if the hard disk is being detected in the BIOS. The key to enter BIOS in E-machines systems are Tab, Del or F2.

If the hard disk is being detected in the BIOS, it could be a faulty hard disk. You can try booting from the recovery partition by pressing Alt+F10 when starting up the computer. If you're able to get into the Recovery Partition, you can try a recovery, but you might lose all your data. If you're not even able to get into the Recovery Partition, you'll need to get the Windows disc for installing the Operating System again.

HP recovery discs can be used to return a computer's software configuration to its original condition. HP provides a recovery solution on the hard drive, but it is still a good idea to keep recovery discs stored in a safe place in the event of a hard drive failure. Use the sections in this document to obtain a recovery solution that works best for you.

HP provides a recovery solution on a separate area of the hard drive. If the hard drive is still functional, you can still perform an HP system recovery from the hard drive as long as the recovery information has not been destroyed or corrupted.

Windows vista recovery cd I created won't install on new hard drive

Which software did you use to create the recovery disk? Is the recovery disk a CD or DVD?

Just to recover a vista system from recovery DVDs would require at least two DVDs. Your files would be in addition to this so I would be very surprised if you have only a single disk containing both the operating system and all of your files.

A simple recovery disk would only be useful for restoring lost operating system files to a hard disk that had corrupted or deleted files. It would let you restore to a new blank disk.

If the disk only contains a backup of your data then you would need to first install an operating system (Vista or Windows 7) and then install the backup software you used to create the disk and then you could recover your data from the disk.

How do I wipe out everything on my lap top so I can start over

I assume you've backed up everything? Get out those disks you either received with the laptop or made after you bought it. Run those and the laptop will be like new. Now what if you didn't make those disks? You can go online to the HP site and download a set of disks. HP usually allows this one time. If you can't then you'll need to download all the drivers for your laptop, put them on a CD and have them ready when you install your operating system. Now just start your operating system disk and make a new install and formatting the hard drive. I know the next question, what if I don't have an operating system disk? Well, of course you can buy one. But I think as a money saver you should check with your friends. First make sure of your exact operating system you need. You can find that on the bottom of your laptop. There is a Microsoft label that tells the operating system that was originally installed on your laptop and the product serial number. Now, try to get an original operating system disk from one of your friends. When you install the operating system at some point it will ask for your serial number. Use the number on the bottom of your laptop. Good luck
