Monitor does not display desktop

I recently purchased a re-furbished desktop computer. After hooking it up to my monitor, the monitor does not display the desktop. Instead it displays "1 Analog input, self test feature check"
How can i get it to display the desktop?

Thank you

I'm not sure that you in fact have a dell, but take a look at this link and see if it helps.
Normally you should be able to use the osd (on screen display) by pressing the buttons on the monitor itself to change the monitor settings and get it to display properly. You need to make sure the monitor cable is connected properly, and perhaps check the cable itself by substituting another one in its place.
If that doesn't change the situation, you can check the monitor on another computer to be sure it's working correctly. In that case, perhaps a local tech could have a quick look at your new system and figure out why it's not sending a good signal to the monitor.
Best of luck!

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take just a moment to rate this post....thanks!

It means that the monitor is absolutely fine and good

now check the data cable which connects the monitor to the tower(CPU)
>>now unplug the ends of the cable and reverse them >> try to disconnect and reconnect
>>it shud work >> if not then the data cable is corrupt

Does the computer running well ? can you hear the fan spinning ? if yes. plug the monitor to VGA port (usually blue )..

first time you turn on the computer if you see any pre POST message on the monitor then the monitor suddenly blank out .... the graphic driver is corrupted... go to safe mode (press F8) disable the graphic driver from device manager.. and re insttall

if the pre POST display is not even on ... test on different monitor that you know working ..... if it still does not work . your computer graphic card is defective... if the graphic is on board. then the motherboard is defective.

Press the menu button on the monitor and toggle to exit
it sounds like it's in a test mode.

It is most likely the cable that connects your computer to your monitor. I just had this same issue myself recently and it was my monitor that was going off and on. Try another VGA cable that runs from your computer tower to your monitor. See if that resolves your issue.

Monitor hook up

You should be able to connect the LCD monitor providing your laptop has got a VGA connector to allow this, then you will need to change your display settings depending on whether you want the same desktop on both monitors or whether you want to extend your laptop desktop on to the second monitor.

Webcam is not found on computer

The webcam is usually built in on the LCD monitor display. Does your monitor have a webcam integrated in it? If you purchased this from Dell or other retailer as a bundle ( computer-monitor printer, etc) most likely there is no webcam. You will have to purchase a webcam.

Yes you put in the video card and the default is lowest resolution and is usable without a driver, install driver then reboot and you have your new video card to set up the way you want.

Hook netbook to tv with rca cables

after hooking it the TV we need to toogle to the external monitor.
Presentation or mirrored display mode
  1. Right-click an empty space on the desktop, and select Personalize .
  2. Select Display Settings
  3. When the New Display Detected dialog box appears, the images on both of the displays will be automatically mirrored.
  4. (Optional) To adjust the resolution, so that the display area of the monitors are the same size in the Display Settings window, select a monitor and slide the resolution slide bar. Click OK to save the setting and exit.
The computer is now ready to display the same screen on all output devices, from monitors to projectors. Press the fn and f4 function keys at the same time to switch the image from the notebook display, to the external monitor, or to both. Extending the desktop
  1. Right-click an empty space on the desktop, and select Personalize .
  2. Select Display Settings c01431951.jpg
  3. Select the monitor representing your second display. Click the Extend the desktop onto this monitor checkbox and click OK . NOTE: To help identify your monitors, click Identify Monitors . The numbers 1 or 2 are shown on the monitor icons to help you identify them.
  4. (Optional) To adjust the resolution, in the Display Settings window, select a monitor and slide the resolution slide bar. Click OK to save the setting and exit.
  5. (Optional) To change the direction the desktop will extend (left or right to match how the displays are physically set up), select a monitor and drag it to the desired position.

My newer flat screen monitor went black but works fine when hooked up to another computer and I have an older monitor that I hooked up and the older one works fine...??

That sounds like a display/resolution setting problem on your PC. I doubt there is anything actually wrong with the PC or the monitor, since both work with different combinations, so its most likely just a setting.

Some monitors don't display anything when they get a signal/resolution that is not compatible with their displays. I would try changing the display settings on your computer with your old monitor, then switch monitors and see if your newer monitor works.

Here's how to adjust the display resolution:
If in XP, right-click on the desktop and go to Properties, and select the tab for display settings and adjust/lower the resolution. If in Vista/Win7 right-click the desktop and select Screen Resolution/Display Settings and adjust it there.
