I've had my Creative Zen Vision: M (30GB) for just over 10 months now - I received it as a Christmas gift last year. It's frozen a number of times on some of my tracks, but I've always had no problem rebooting it before. (A couple of months ago it couldn't read any of my files, but a firmware upgrade fixed that.)
Today, while rewinding on a track, it froze on me. After I rebooted it, about 2/5 into the rebuilding process it pauses, restarts the rebuilding process, gets 2/5 into it again and then tells me I have a "Firmware Problem". I headed to the recovery screen, upgraded the firmware (I'd been using 1.51 before), and waited as it restarted itself.
The same screen comes up.
I went again and did clean up, tried to reinstall the firmware to make sure that it had installed properly (it had). The "Firmware Problem" screen comes up every time.
I've tried everything short of formatting it - because it's near-filled up with video files that I don't have on my laptop (nor any way to get them again) anymore, I'd like to hold on to them. Is there any way I can get my Zen to work again without having to format?
-   I have nearly the exact same problem, apart from mine is the 60GB version. It froze on day, and as the guy before, I normally reset it and it's all ok. Recently though I have heard a little clicking sound as if it was struggling to read the HD, and it was taking ages to switch between random albulms. Anyway, this time when I reset I could not reboot so I left connected to my PC to charge and when it eventually did give me the flashing charging sign I tried to turn on and got the 'normal' rebuilding libary sign, about 50% into the status bar I would then get another logo saying 'Firmware Problem'. I have no problem with formatting the thing, as I have everything stored, but when I use the recovery tool on creative web site it cannot see the player! Nor can my computer. Anybody?!?!?!?!-   jodiwalker

I would simply connect the player to the computer, use windows explorer to move files to laptop or external drive, then reformat and simply re-transfer the files back from the laptop.

How can I tell if my Zen Vision M has a dead battery? I bought this years ago and used it briefly but havn't touched it since. When I plug it in (via the wall plug, not the computer) I can turn the unit on - I let it charge for about 8 hours yesterday but the second I unplug it, it turns off completely and I can only get it to turn back on when I plug it back in to the outlet. I wouldn't think the battery could be dead since it was probably only used for a total of 20 hours (max) but maybe because it's been sitting there unused the battery died??? How can I tell if it's really a dead battery or something else?

My Zen froze, so I hit the reset button. It gets to about 1/3 of 'rebuilding' and then freezes. Have tried letting the battery go flat & starting again - no joy. Computer is not recognising software while it is 'rebuilding'... It's never done this before usually it resets and then goes fine.
