Question about Nikon D40x Digital Camera

1 Answer

Nikon D40 problem, often will not take pictures

Will attempt to take what should be a point and shoot type picture and when I press shutter button it doesn't do anything. Battery is fully charged, memory contains no pictures, plenty of natural light. Playing with the camera I thought I had an answer by setting 18 -55 lens to 18 and it appeared to work for several pictures but 5 minutes later back to original problem. Have used the camera on several trips and not had any problems, I performed a 'reset' function to restore defaults in case I inadvertently changed something but still no solution.

Excellent question and I should have noticed, nothing happens when depressing shutter halfway.

I checked and double checked this, everything obvious seems to be right.

But are you then able to take a picture? If so the problem was related to focus and not a problem with the camera or settings..

If not the intermittent problem could be associated by the specific mode selected for pictures on my cam - Can you try it in Auto mode and see what issues it comes back if any?

What happens when you press the shoot button halfway for a couple of seconds and then press all the way?

Chuck,

Sounds like your lens might be set to M rather than M/A. Try that and let me know.

Nikon d40 monitor is black when camera is on

Does the menu show when you press the MENU button? Can you see your pictures when you press the Playback button (right-pointing triangle)? If so, then there's nothing to fix.
The D40 works as SLRs have worked for half a century. There's a viewfinder which allows you to frame and compose your picture. The LCD monitor is for menus, camera settings, and picture review. LiveView, which allows you to use the monitor for shooting, is a recent development, which Nikon introduced into their cameras with the D3 and D300, both introduced years after the D40.

What mode are you shooting in? if in manual, your shutter speed is to slow and your photos are probably overexposed. or if you are in one of the program modes you probably have exposure compensation turned up very high. so turn down your exposure compensation down by holding the button that has a plus and a minus on it and turn so that it is set to 0

You cannot take a picture when your camera has not been focused yet. This is done by pointing your selected focus point on your subject, then click the shutter button halfway / half-pressed until you here a beep or see a dot on the lower left portion of your viewfinder. Once you have locked your focus, press the shutter button all the way down to take the shot.

Just bought a Nikon D40 Camera and sometimes when I view pictures that have been taken, the pictures get distorted. Is this common or and easy fix. dee

Your pictures are most probably distorted because of camera shake.
If you invest in a Nikon lens with VR = vibration reduction or a Sigma hsm os = optical stabilization, this will allow you to shoot at slower speeds and will reduce camera shake.

The most obvious problem will be shooting in low light conditions without vr or os...this will give blurred images. You will need to up the iso and shutter speed with a wide aperture to achieve more stable images.
Bear in mind, when you raise the iso, you will get noiser images and the Nikon D40 does not handle noise very well - but can be eliminated with software.
Hope this helps.

How do I get my nikon d40 to take Black white pictures?

You CAN!!! shoot in b/w with a d40, the only thing is you can't shoot in auto mode it has to be manual , aperture priority, or shutter prioirity. Go into menu - shooting mode - optimize image. you'll find it in there.

Try pressing the "info" button on the top of the camera next to the shutter button. This turns the LCD off and on to save battery life.
