Toshiba 3010 Portage CT network connection options

I only see a RJ11 jack available on this notebook. What do I need to do for ethernet capability? I would like to use this device to connect to a Comcast high speed modem.

The RJ11 jack is for connecting to a phone line, your laptop has a built-in phone modem.
You need a network card with a RJ45 jack, there are numerious PCMCIA network card available, there are also USB network devices that you can use. I suggest you use a PCMCIA network card, and leaves the USB port free for other uses.

Connecting to my network

Its not a modem its a router. A Modem plugs in to a Telephone line. A Router plugs in to a Broad Band Line. A Modem connects to a RJ11 Cable. A Router Connects to a Coaxial Cabal, the router connects to a computer via wireless or ethernet after that. A Modem connects to a computer using RJ11 or RJ45 Cat4 Ethernet. Very different.

What does plug a cable into net work adaper mean? what kind and where would I do this .?

"Cable" is an ethernet, well, cable... usually comes with any network hardware you purchase, and is readily available at your local WalMart for just a few bucks. You plug the end that looks like a over sized phone plug (RJ45 "ethernet" rather than RJ11 "dial up/analog") into the port that looks like yet another over sized phone jack. You should see either green or orange lights kick on when a connection is made... to let you know "mission accomplished."

How connect to internet?

First you should check what kind of connection you have available in your home or office.
If you have a wireless connection, (and your computer has wireless capabilities)* then all you have to do is identify your network and enter the password. Try accessing the networking options and selecting "connect to an existing network". Most of the times, the password is written between brackets "[ ]" in the router or modem that was installed in your house.
On the other hand, if you have a wired connection available, you should try to connect the ethernet cable in your computer and then select the same option (connect to an existing network). This one should have no password. An ethernet cable is like a telephone cable, but wider.
Good luck!
* you should check this on the manual / specifications.

I want to connect a CAT5e Ethernet cable (with or without a RJ45 connector) from a DSL router to an older computer that only has a RJ11 input. This will be used for DSL internet service only -- no...

The only "outputs" from a DSL-router are:
* RJ-11 telephone-jack, only if the router also supports voice-over-IP,
* RJ-45 Ethernet port (always present)

You need to purchase an internal network-card, to create an RJ-45 port on the computer, and then use the CAT-5e cable to make the connection.

The Cable may have loose connect to the RJ45 jack get another good cable and it will work. Also make sure that the clip on the RJ45 jack as not broken and make it click when you connect the jack to the Network port on your laptop

Modem connection

Your modem should have a RJ11 (phone) jack and a RJ45 (ethernet) jack. Phone line-in to modem RJ11. Ethernet cable from RJ45 to modem to router; maybe labeled WAN or modem port . Ethernet from any of the switch ports (or the only one avail, depending on your model) to you pc if it has a ethernet card in it. After that it's all up to the configuration.
