Suddenly it's begun making a deep beeping noise and no PC can find it.

It seems to be Part No.: D320HD35

Searching around for it on Google I found this, which shows a picture and has the matching model number:

    http://www.pricecanada.com/detail.php?pr...

The website listed on the box for help ishttp://www.dr-tech.com/ but that has absolutely nothing except televisions.

It also seems, on closer inspection, that if it's plugged in and powered on it develops a sort of "plastic" smell that in the DC/In plug, which eventually goes away.

  • mea_culpa May 14, 2009

There is no warranty, I've had it for 3-4 years.

Everything on it is important... and this WAS my back-up. I just
restored my computer and found that the HDD wasn't working when I tried
to put everything back on the PC.

  • mea_culpa May 14, 2009

Oh, and I've now pulled it out of it's shell. When it powers on none of the parts move, it just does that beeping noise.

I'm out of the house right now, but I'll respond with details and pictures when I get home later on. I'd be more then willing to pay for a new circuit board even if we're not sure that's the issue, simply because I'll try anything to recover the files.

I'm located in Vancouver BC, Canada.

That plastic smell is usually a bad sign, burning or overheating electronics. Only really three questions that matter then.

    1. Is it under warranty?

    2. Is there anything important on it you do not have backed up elsewhere

    3. Are you handy with a small screwdriver?

Can you provide the model number for this Hard drive?

Ouch, why is it these things always seem to die same time as the computer?

Ok, thanks for updating the post. If you're still feeling handy and have a small set of torques screwdrivers, it is possible to change out the circuit board and see if it's just a failed board. However if the failure is inside the shell you'll definitely need a pro as you cannot open the casing except in a cleanroom.

what is the make, model, part # manufacture date, firmware and site code from the actual hard drive you extracted from the shell?

If you're still feeling handy I'll see if I can track down a spare board you can purchase, if you've hit your limit I'll help you find a pro.

Also where are you located?

    Ok,

I am in Saskatoon SK and work in Data Recovery so I will check the closest supplier of your boards once you get me the details. If that doesn't work I'll help you get setup with the next step(Pro).

External harddrive

yea this is a hard one you will need a recovery program something good that will go in deep and find all the shadow programs on your (HDD) Hard drive. if your computer does not recognize this HDD or memory stick this means u have reformatted a computer and the HDD or memory stick has been taken out half way through the format process. if you get a recovery program this means u will not get everything off it will only take the shadows of all your programs and files.

I hope this helps
