Question about Dell Inspiron 9100 XPS Latitude D400 Latitude D505 CDRW/ DVD Combo - C0932 CD-ROM Drive
I have a Dell D505 and the laptop nor xp recognises my cd/dvd station.
It does not appear in XP nor can i boot from it... And i really need it... :-)
I tried installing the driver but this looks for the drive... and because XP does not find it... it just stops...
While booting up as soon as you see any writing in the top right hand corner, click F2 and enter setup
look for booting order, and make sure the cd rom is in the first place before boot from hard drive. save and exit and the reboot with the XP disk in the cd rom drive. Try a repair from disk or if you want to a total reinstall.
Another thing you might try is click on F8 on boot up and enter in Safe Mode, and see what is giving your the headache.

First open the "Device Manager" to check for any error messages related to the device and click on "Start" and select "Control Panel" .
Now double-click on the "System" icon then click on the "Hardware" tab and click the "Device Manager" button. A new window appears, and displays whether the device is working properly. If there are any errors, click the "Troubleshoot" button and follow the given onscreen instructions.
Check the DVD that you are trying to use to and ensure that it is free of dirt and scratches and the proper format compatible with your drive.
Now uninstall any drivers that may be on your computer from previous DVD drives.
Now download the latest driver updates for your DVD drive model from Dell website & install it.
Also check on Dell website that your machine has the minimum requirements to operate the drive.
Now restart your computer & check your DVD drive.

Have you went to the SETUP program , normally you would have to press F2 or F10 and go to external bay and activate it if it is unchecked.
