There is no setup program... I only go into the bios...

(It is not USB, just to clarify...) Can I download the setup somewhere? I looked at the Dell website... but it is not really clear what to download... :/

  • w_biesemans May 13, 2009

Putting it as first device doesn't help he just skips it and continues with XP... Already tried safe mode too doesn't help neither :-)

  • w_biesemans May 13, 2009

Well what do you know, suddenly he does recognize it... Solved I guess.. Any explanation? :-s

  • w_biesemans May 13, 2009

And it is gone again... I am afraid that there is something wrong with my motherboard... true?

While booting up as soon as you see any writing in the top right hand corner, click F2 and enter setup
look for booting order, and make sure the cd rom is in the first place before boot from hard drive. save and exit and the reboot with the XP disk in the cd rom drive. Try a repair from disk or if you want to a total reinstall.
Another thing you might try is click on F8 on boot up and enter in Safe Mode, and see what is giving your the headache.

Don't give up the ship that easily, new motherboards are very expensive,
I would try the total reinstall of XP and yes you did it correctly when you entered setup...and it is F2...do it again...the eight item down is BOOT SEQUENCE (use your arrow keys to move up and down) when that is selected click on Enter that gets you over to the place you need to be. You need to make cd/dvd rom it the number one spot, use the letters U- up D -down to make it the first spot then hit enter again and exit that way your computer will boot from the operating system on the CD instead of the hard drive.
once you have that in the first place put you win XP disk in the drive and restart your computer. now you will see a text message that say BOOT FROM CD. . . . . .press any key - swiftly and it will start running windows...if you are able to do a reinstall of your operating system and it makes it the whole way through, you motherboard is fine. it is a pain in the ... but it is a lot cheaper. Now you'll also have to put some drivers back in go to this link and put your service code tag in, that will give you exactly the drivers for your particular computer.
    http://support.dell.com/support/download...
again, in the first box, put in your service tag # (on the bottom of your computer) add the rest of the drivers you need and you will have a totally fresh operating system- the very next thing I would install would be my anti-virus program before you reload anything else. If you need anymore assistance, just ask
This is what I would do, a pain yes, but if it works and continues to work...you too will be a Dell Expert.

First open the "Device Manager" to check for any error messages related to the device and click on "Start" and select "Control Panel" . Now double-click on the "System" icon then click on the "Hardware" tab and click the "Device Manager" button. A new window appears, and displays whether the device is working properly. If there are any errors, click the "Troubleshoot" button and follow the given onscreen instructions. Check the DVD that you are trying to use to and ensure that it is free of dirt and scratches and the proper format compatible with your drive. Now uninstall any drivers that may be on your computer from previous DVD drives. Now download the latest driver updates for your DVD drive model from Dell website & install it. Also check on Dell website that your machine has the minimum requirements to operate the drive. Now restart your computer & check your DVD drive. I hope issue has been resolved. If the same problem is still occurring, get the reliable Dell support at http:/www./vtechsquad.com/dell-support/

Have you went to the SETUP program , normally you would have to press F2 or F10 and go to external bay and activate it if it is unchecked.

Dell xps wont boot from dvd just cd

Sounds like you have only a CD drive. To boot DVDs you need to have a DVD drive installed. The computer probably came with a CD drive because Win XP came on a CD.

I was looking for step-by-step install guide to putting new hard drive and loading Windows XP on my Dell Inspiron E1505?? I purchased a WD 320GB SATA hard drive to replace my dead 80gb hard drive....Dell...

All you've got to do is:

1) Insert the new hard drive.
2) Press the F8 key as the laptop boots. This will take you into the BIOS.
3) Locate the disk drive priority setting in the bios.
4) Set Priority 1 to your CD/DVD drive and priority 2 to the 320GB hard drive.
5) Save settings and exit the BIOS. This should reboot your laptop.
6) Insert the Windows XP CD.
7) It should not start the setup as it recognises the CD.
8) I will recommend that you format the drive before you install, go along with the format (make sure it does a full format).
9) After the format it will reboot your system.
10) You will be prompted with a message like "Press any key to boot form CD", DON'T press anything otherwise it will start all over again.
11) Now it should start the install. Follow the on-screen instructions.

How do you reset the latitude d505 to factory settings

How to reset the latitude d505 to factory settings:

If you have Windows XP,

Step 1: Backup everything that is important to you.
Step 2: Boot your computer using the Windows installable CD.
Step 3: Format your harddisk or repartition it.
Step 4: Install Windows XP using the installable CD.

Don't try this if you are not sure of what you are doing. It won't damage your laptop, but you might require a long time to get your laptop working again.

I have problem wiyth Dell Latitude 505 with corrupted windows xp. I can not boot from cd/dvd because it is broken. Can I use external usb DVD and boot from it ?

For that you must put the USB first in the boot order from the BIOS and disable/remove the CD/DVD entry - leave the hard disk in second and nothing else.

Hard drive died & replaced with a new hd

Make sure your pc is recognizing the drive before installing any program. If the drive is recognized but is still not booting, then reset your pc as soon as the pops up press f12 which will show a list of the booting order you of course will want to select cd drive or you can enter f2 and make the booting configuation changes thru your BIOS in the Booting Sequence. change the order or replace the drive or drivers and Voila Your good to go, Hope this helps

Good Luck =)

HOW TO INSTALL WINDOWS XP ON DELL LAPTOP

go into bios by pressing F2 - change the boot order so the cd / dvd drive is the first bootable device and use the installation / recovery disc you got with it and boot from the cd and re install or install windows xp.

If you do not have the cd then you either need to find it or contact dell and see if they have another one with a key ( which may be chargeable )

No bootable devices on my Dell Inspiron 1150

My Laptop Inspiron 2200 With Windows XP only boot with the C drive when I remove the CD-DVD-CD drive. Otherwise ,I am asked to go to Bios to reconfigure the booting order.
The CD-dvd can not be pick-up by Plug and Play .

As a result I can only use the Laptop without the CD-DVD

When I reconnect the DVD it will not boot.

I have inspected every single pin in the DVD and from the Motherboard I can not see any damages

What do you think is the problem?
