Question about Sony PlayStation 2 Slimline Console

1 Answer

Playstation 2 slimline will just jump to the browswer screen

The console will not run, the disc will not spin, is this easy to fix or do I have to get my kids a new one? If you go under browser to diagnose it just states no data found.

Re: Playstation 2 slimline will just jump to the browswer...

Hi Johnston5,

If it will boot up it is worth fixing.  You can get a new disc drive from for around $20 delivered. The task of replacing the drive is a bit complicated and you could total the unit if you do not release the laser ribbon cable correctly. You have to pop up the retainer on the socket the ribbon plugs into on the laser and the motherboard.  The other two ribbon cables pull out and insert without having to release a retainer.  If your not comfortable with doing this, I run the Playstation Clinic and will do it for you.  The price for replacing the Disc drive in the Slim is $41 including return shipping inside the USA. Contact me at Repairtech@playstationclinic if you would like for me to refurbish you slim.

The disc spins but doesn't show anything. It goes straight to the browser and system configuration screen. It acts like there's no disc in it.

PS2 Slim Disc Wont Spin

Sounds like the laser has gone out. The unit will not try to spin unless the laser can see the disc. A new laser can be picked up on ebay for less than $10

Wont spin discs

It needs a new DVD drive I would say. I fix them and it's a really common problem with them.

I buy mine at they run about $30 each.

I run a repair business and that place has best prices aside from Hong Kong which I don't trust.

Will not read disc says open tray

mines doing the same thing except its not spinning

so i suspect its one of two things
i need to find another piece to make it spin

or maybe the laser is damage or dirty

Since yours is spinning i would say its the laser

Non playable discs

Hi i had the same problem on my 360,
so i got a new laser off of ebay,
and that didn't fix it so then i read some fourms,
and found that my drive motor that spins the disc was broken,
so i replaced that and now the xbox is working like new again :)

Disc won't spin. Disc doesn't show up in browser

You got a problem with the lasers data getting back to the Motherboard.
One of these could be your problem

  1. Laser lens is melted. Look at the lens with a magnifying glass to see if it or its supporting frame is melted. REplace the laser in this case.
  2. The ribbon Cable going from the Laser to the motherboard is damaged or loose.
  3. Your laser is burned out. Press the two interlock to override the door being open, to see if the laser even lights up. 2 switches, one at rear left corner, one behind the On/reset switch.
  4. Your Laser is dirty and needs cleaning look at it with a magnifying Glass to make sure you got it clean. Use Q-tip and window glass cleaner, not alcohol.

X box 360 broke

The only solution really is to open your 360, open the DVD drive and try to see if you can posibibly unfreze the drive. Its possible that you are going to have to put a new drive in it. I would just send your console off, even though you'll have to wait on the Halo experience. If you do open your console, you're going to void your warranty and Halo may cost you a whole 'nother $300. When and if you open your console, you will need to check if the laser is operational. With the console open (check Google for a huge list of how-to-open-it guides) go on ahead and remove the cover from the DVD drive, but keep the DVD drive still placed in the Xbox 360. Hook-up your power and video cable and go ahead and press the eject button (you can place this back on without putting the console back together, even though its ness. to take it off during the disassembly) and watch the tray. Listen and watch for any resistance, stuttering, swaying to one side (hold the console flat), and scraching. It should be very smooth and automatic. Then procede to close the tray but this time watch the laser. Don't look directly over the laser, but try to catch if it lights up (red) and it may even move a little at you. Again, everything should be smooth and automatic. Now for the slightly tricky bit. Take the worst possible game in your collection (King Kong?) and place it on the open tray (open tray, place disc on tray) and then close the tray. Hold the 360 as flat as possible or don't hold it at all (the latter option is better if you have a table nearby) and watch the disc, always ready to press the eject button if something goes wrong and your disc spins out of control and/or you hear scratching. An alternate, safer method of checking to see if the disc spins is to take a fridge magnet and place it on the center spindle magnet and let the disc spin (the magnet, just like the one in the DVD drive cover, hold the disc in place as it spins at super-sonic speed!). Just use the very simple process of emiliation to determine the root cause of your DVD drive problems and then repost. Just remember that this voids your warranty and only open your console if you're sure that you want to try to fix it and you are willing to accept that you may be left with a brick afterwards. That's it for what you should do to diagnose the problem, good luck!

When i start paystation "browser system configuration" comes up

insert a disc at the browser will give this option you are used to seeing or if you have a disc in the drive and still see no data message you require a new laser
