I had the same problem exactly. It was also characterized by the ice dispenser not working (push paddle and light would dim and all activity in the fridge would quit, then clicking would continue). Found part at local appliance parts store for 96.70 including tax. Installed it myself in about 20 minutes (most of time protecting hardwood floor from rolling fridge). Then GE service man came. Material and service was covered under flukmanji's referenced letter. I emailed the name on the letter and got immediate service. I just couldn't wait on the appointment since the fridge was down. Very pleased. Fridge started back up perfectly. Service man looked over everything else for no charge.

I have just experienced the same failure mode, and may know why the board failed.

My daughter was painting her room, and tried to find the correct breaker to shut down her room ceiling lights. She switched off a number of breakers, and later told me the fridge was making a clicking sound.

The main board must be sensitive to transient noise spikes. I'm an electrical engineer, and do know that sometimes driver chips can fail if a spike hits at the wrong instant.

I will fix my fridge and use a surge protector in that circuit.

Dear GE Customer Care Servicers,

GE Consumer & Industrial places a very high priority on product quality and customer satisfaction

and thus continuously assesses our product reliability. Recent analysis has discovered a potential

problem with the main circuit board on a limited number of refrigerator models, which could lead

to lower than anticipated life expectancy on that component. Therefore, if the main circuit

board fails, GE Consumer & Industrial will replace this part free of charge to the consumer until

further notice.

Models Covered: see attachment

The models affected are side-by-side plastic liner, side-by-side metal liner, bottom freezer two

door and bottom freezer French door. The models were produced between May 2005 and August

2006 (HH – RL serial range) and are included in this program. See enclosed list.

Potential Additional Covered Parts:

Specific parts involving the failure of the main board are included in this program. These parts

are limited to the following:

-Evaporator Fan failure, only if accompanied by a Main Board failure

-Dispenser Board failure, only if accompanied by a Main Board failure

The main board part number in cases in WR55X10552. Please use your normal warranty MA00 job

code for this repair. If you encounter an evaporator fan or dispenser board failure due to the

above main board, please include on your invoice and use the normal MA00 job code. It is critical

that you verify the proper functioning of the unit including the evaporator fan motor and

dispenser board before leaving the home to avoid a repeat call.

Units may be in or out of the standard 1-year product warranty and both instances are covered

under this concession program.

If you previously completed this repair and charged the consumer, please send a copy of the

service invoice to General Electric Consumer Relations, PO Box 10736, Norfolk, VA 23513 or fax a

copy to 1-877-299-0725 so that we may issue a refund to the consumer.

Sincerely,

Richard Zutterman

Say Billsdaddy, thanks for posting the letter. I hadn't been able to find it anywhere prior to now Do you still have the attachment with all of the model numbers? I'm wrestling with G.E. right now over the replacement part . Mine is a 2003 freezer on top (if that matters).

Fluk, based on my experience with these refrigerators, I'd bet you the Mother Board has failed. That's where the clicking is coming from. To verify this, pull the refrigerator out away from the wall then remove the aluminum panel back there (there are 4 screws holding it in place). This will expose the mother board. You won't have to use any more tools to diagnose it... you'll hear the clicking sound coming from this board.

Your 5 yr. warranty information only applies to the sealed system components; compressor, condenser, evaporator and freon. The board isn't covered, I'm sorry to say. You can try calling GE at 1-800-GE-CARES (1-800-432-2737) and explain to them that your board has failed, but I doubt you'd get very far. (They will probably try to talk you into having a GE repair company come out and do the repair, though. <-- at a cost of about $275.00.)

You can repair this for the cost of the part... about $120.00. The part number you'll need is WR55X10552 and can be obtained from your local appliance parts store (like Sears) or purchased online. There is an instruction sheet that comes with the replacement part... read it carefully. This is a very easy repair, it can be done in about 20 minutes. Remember... If you repair it yourself, UNPLUG YOUR FRIDGE BEFORE YOU BEGIN!!!

*TIP---> After you have the repair completed, plug your fridge into a quality surge protector, like this one or something similar.

My 7 year old Beko Fridge freezer is making kind of crackling sounds more and more frequently. The sound is coming from a flat square box about the size of a plug socket at the back of the appliance

Hello Marie;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

I need more information:

What is the full model number of you unit.

1.) Is your unit working?

2.) On top of your compressor is a condensate drain pan. This sometimes falls off and the condensate hits the hot compressor.

3.) If it is a clicking sound, it is your compressor overload relay starting the compressor.

Give me more information and I am sure I can help you.

REFRIGERATOR IS MAKING A BUZZING SOUND, not cooling

You have one of two problems going on. Your fan is spinning at hitting the sides. Or your compressor is shot which seems to be more the problem and even though it is cold the humming sound is a warning for you that the compressor is shot and it is more affordable to replace the fridge then the compressor. Sometimes compressor can cost more then the fridge.

Refrigerator noisy after compressor replacement.

There may be too much refrigerant in the system. If he did not use a vacuum pump before adding freon, then air is in the system but does not cause a gurgling sound, it just won't cool properly.

If you have a 5 year warranty, you should not take anything apart and consult the place where you got the appliance.
They should be able to tell you exactly what is covered under warranty before they work on it.

Kenmore Refrigerator making loud noise

Does the sound occur when the compressor is starting or shutting down? and only lasts for a couple of seconds? I had one do the exact same thing. Sometimes it would also wake me up at night. If so, I'm afraid he is right. On the bright side, it worked fine for years. I gave it to a girlfriend when I purchased a bigger one and it is still working today. The only thing you can do is change the compressor, which is probably not $$ practical.

Kenmore not freezing nor cooling. humming noise

DONT SAY THAT COMPRESSORS BAD YET !!!! TECHCUMSE AND COPELAND ALL HAVE THE SAME COMPONENTS FOR STARTING THE COMPRESSOR. ALL COMPRESSORS HAVE EITHER A "PIN-TYPE PLUG-IN START RELAY, OR CAPACITOR START ASSIST RELAY" TO GET THE COMPESSOR TURNING.( FROST-FREE REFRIGERATORS ALMOST ALWAYS HAVE A START-CAPACITOR, RELAY, AND T-STAT COMBO ON ALL MAKES. THE IN LINE BI-METAL TYPE T-STAT THAT PREVENTS THE COMPRESSOR FRON OVER HEATING... THEY CAN GO WEAK. THIS IS THE "CLICKING SOUND YOU ARE HEARING !!! CALL A REPUTABLE DEALER THAT IS "FACTORY CERTIFIED" FOR YOUR MAKE AND MODEL AND GET A "FLAT-RATE" DIAGNOSTIC CHECK PERFORMED. NEVER LET A REPAIRMAN TAKE DEFECTIVE PARTS OUT OF YOUR HOUSE FOR ANY REASON. BY LAW THEY HAVE TO LET YOU KEEP THEM UNLESS THEY ARE REPLACING THEM COVERED UNDER WARRANTY FOR EXCHANGE. UNFORTUNATELY HUNDREDS OF CONSUMERS ARE "BILKED" BY THE " DOI-IT-ALL REPAIR-MAN. MOST MANUFACTURES ONLY HAVE 1 YEAR ON COMPRESSORS FOR REFRIGERATORS 5-10 YEARS ON A/C COMP. DONT BE AFFRAID TO WATCH AND ASK QUESTIONS TO REPAIRMEN YOU LET "INTO YOUR HOME".
