Whining noise from agitator

Great service; thanks for your forum....
Turns out my nightgown strap went OVER the agitator during last cycle.  When I came back down to basement towards the end of the cycle I heard the whine, finally un-wound all the clothing that got tangled because of the strap trapped around agitator.
I tried it again; agitator seems to work the same but the continuous whine worries me.
Is there a way to remove the agitator to see what's going on?  Any other suggestions?
Thanks
Susan

is there any way to diagnose it before i call in an expert?

I'm past the warranty, have had the unit for 10 years, it's been great till now

I've been told it most likely is the gearbox; just checking to see if there might be another solution --

or another way to diagnose it w/o bringing a tech to the house as I'm unemployed and replacing the gearbox is pretty expensive, I've heard.

    thanks

Look at the top third of the agitator, there should be a ring that lifts up about a half inch , then the top of the agitator comes off.
Sometimes these will get cocked crooked when things get wound around them and will start making weird noises, sooo... pulling up the ring, taking the top off, replacing the top part and pushing the ring back down will stop the noise...

Usually a bearing/gearbox problem going bad will create a howling grinding noise. You'll definitely hear it in the spin cycle. These are an expensive fix and require special technician tools to disassemble the unit. The gearbox is a sealed unit. Most manufacturers warranty their unit's gearbox for 5 years regardless the warranty you got when you purchased the unit, so check into this before you void your warranty. (The manufacturer requires their factory authorized service technicians to do the replacement) All in all if you do the work yourself it'll be approx $250 for the parts and gearbox transmission. To have the work done is usually much more.

Loud squealing during agitation

It appears your clutch assembly has failed in this instance.

For replacement parts - head on over to PartSelect.com or RepairClinic.com and enter in your full model number for a full parts listing.
I recommend both sites because ...

FixYa has no affiliation with either site - I have been using and recommending them for years - trouble free.

PartSelect has a great schematic database for locating the part on your unit and great "testimonials" for each part that often times includes HOW-TO information.
RepairClinic has pictures of each part they sell and also a great how-to and troubleshooting for basic repairs.

If your unit has never been serviced - there should still be an original service manual enclosed in plastic taped to the inside of the shell.
In the service manual are Error codes, maintenance procedures, and troubleshooting steps you can follow.

Anything too complicated or beyond your scope should be handled by a professional.

If you think you want to tackle the repair - and have gotten stuck on a step - reply to your question and I will be glad to help you out.

Washing machine making whining noise during spin only

Yes, bearing, most definitely. It is a cheap part but difficult to replace.

Washer make a clicking noise

Zoobs, you could have something stuck under the agitator. The agitator will pull straight off. Grip it on each side and pull up hard, but don't hit yourself in the face. If that don't work, try slipping a belt under it and pull. Check for something caught under it. Another possibility could be the nylon suspension rod socket supports in the back. They will make a noise during agitation if they are dry. Put a little 3 in 1 oil to quite them down. Take the front panel off and check the pulley and belt, see if anything is out of whack. I also often find the motor support hitting the bottom panel during agitation making noise. Take the front panel off and observe during agitation. See if the support is striking the bottom. If so, just bend the bottom panel down. Catriver..post back.

"howling" noise during spin cycle (still there after changing burned off belt)

Travioso, there was two service flashes out on this model concerning the seal and bearing which means they had an issue with this washer. The howling noise you are hearing is the bearing and will need the new designed triple seal and bearing kit. This should be covered under your warranty, I believe it is 5 years. The numbers for the service flashes are TDL-0048A-B. Call Maytag and inquire about these service flashes, these should be covered. Catriver.
