Convergence bad or just need reseated?

I have this Philips projection tv, aligned the convergence and it looks great! Unfortunately, sometimes it temporarily goes out of convergence from 10 seconds to ten minute, then aligns again. It sometimes help if I turn it off and unplug it. Do I just need to reseat the chips or are they bad? Thanks

i usually just unplug it, than plug it back in immediately. Works fine, than randomly goes out and comes back. I wouldn't say it gets worse though, because it comes back the same quality no matter how long it is on.

ah, I'm not to familiar with the terminology for projection tv's....what do you mean by drift? As far as, when it goes out of alignment for a short term, the screen looks bowed and the colors vary from the distance there apart.

When you say it goes out of convergence, how far would you say it drifts?

I think you may be looking at dry joints problem on the circuit possibly on the convergence panel ? favorite place for them to go is around the scan coil plugs ( circuit side ) The convergence is ok then a the solder / set warms up expansion happens and the fault reappears , when you pull the plug and put it back in the dry joint arcs and bonds for a while until it is warm then parts again , also if this set has the manuel convergence panel fitted the variable resistors or Pots sometimes go o/c or need resoldering but that's mainly on the older sets , the newer ones have an electronic convergence control and it is on the outputs that get the most heat is generated as expected . should you wish to try and repair this yourself which I do not recomend .With the set completely disconnected from the supply check for dry joints around the line transformers and around the scan coil sockets ( line transformers are the ones connected to the tube by a signal HT wire DO NOT TOUCH THIS this can carry a charge of up to 2000 volts when off and 25,000 volts when live ) If as you suggest the Convergance chip is in a dim socket gently push down on the chip using some insulation a small piece of wood or plastic so as not to touch the chip ..as static in the human body can sometimes damage electronic components being careful not to bend the circuit beneath the dim socket .. hope this helps Regards Vortash

We no longer have the remote for model 55pp9401 and we have a convergence problem what can we do

Here's the Philips support URL for your TV:

PDF download of your Owners' manual:

Here's what Philips FAQ says about your convergence procedure:
Question How do I adjust convergence (align colors)? Answer Note: For best results, the Projection TV needs to be turned on for 15 minutes or longer before adjusting the picture tubes (convergence).

Press the INTELLISENSE button on the remote (under the flap). During the convergence process DO NOT press the INTELLISENSE button again and DO NOT move the Projection TV.

So, I think you're going to need to order a replacement remote.

I have a philips 55 and all of asudden my tv looks like its in 3D.

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right. And you should be able to get the grid straight.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a fix

Need the default coloring for the Philips 55P8341 tv

The most likely cause is shorted convergence chips and possibly a few pico fuses.

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get a convergenece repair kit with instructions from the links below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2
Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

Philips 60 inch rear projection screen is wacky!!

Your TV most likely has one or more possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.
