Engine chugging, like there is no gas but there is and a sulphar smell

the convertor is the problem.will cause decreased engine power, another sign is bucking and jerking upon accelerating. the car will lose power when going up a hill. if engine runs hotter then usual and coolant is up to par, may be a bad converter.

Where is the fuel filter in a Volvo S40 2005

Yes that is correct. The only filter is inside the fuel tank, and as I recall its a non exchangeable filter. It just gets replaced with the fuel pump when it goes bad

Maintenance of s40 volvo 2003

Volvo is a good car. if you maintain you volvo by changing the oil on time, maybe after every month according to how you drive and changing you fuel filter, using 93 grade fuel or 89. I advice you to keep your volve. do your oil change on time don't wait until three to five months before changing your oil and don't use poor fuel (87) grade. change your tranmission oil after 18 months then your volvo is yours for life.

Volvo s40 gdi

My 1998 Volvo does the same sometimes. Better petrol helps for me, these engines like the higher octane petrol. My car does not like the BP petrol at all for example.

Smell of fuel

I had a similar problem. The breather pipe on the fuel tank got loose. You can push it back on. but it usually stays on for a day or two. Try to fasten it, (not much space), or replace the pipe. I noticed that the smell was the strongest, when you fill the tank to the full. There were also drops of fuel in the driveway at home, if I returned home directly from the gas station.
