SOURCE: toner/drum problems

This seems to happen some of the time. Brother has an FAQ for this:

1. Verify the toner cartridge is installed correctly by following the
steps listed below:

a. Open the front cover.

b. Lift the drum unit slightly and pull it out. Place the drum unit on
adrop cloth or large piece of disposable paper to avoid spilling and
scattering the toner.

c. Remove the toner cartridge from the drum by holding down the lock
lever (blue tab) on the left side of the drum unit and lift the toner
out.
*Handle the toner cartridge carefully. If toner scatters on your hands
or clothes, immediately wash it off with cold water.

d. Gently rock the toner cartridge from side to side five or six times
to distribute the toner evenly inside the cartridge.

e. Place the toner cartridge into the drum (be sure it clicks into
place).

f. Clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding
the blue tab on the top of the cartridge from right to left several
times. Return the blue tab to the home position before reinstalling the
drum unit assembly.

g. Reseat the drum unit into the machine.

h. Close the front cover.

2. If the message "Toner Life End" continues to appear on the display,
contact Brother Customer Service at 1-877-Brother (276-8437) Monday
through Friday, 9:00am - 7:00pm EST, excluding holidays.

SOURCE: Toner Cartridge & Drum Stuck-Can't get it out!

I have found that the latch on the left side that swings down and up with the door opening and closing comes off or unhooked. Make sure it is pulled down. Then it will allow the cartridge and drum to come free. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: brother 8460n - toner error

Hi, This worked for us:

The message "Toner Error" is usually caused by the drum and/or toner
cartridge not being installed properly or if the machine does not
recognize the toner. To clear this message, follow the steps listed
below:

1. Verify you are using Genuine Brother Cartridges. Brother strongly
recommends that you do not refill the toner cartridges provided with
your machine. We also strongly recommend that you continue to use only
Genuine Brother Brand replacement toner cartridges. Use or attempted use
of potentially incompatible tone cartridges in the Brother machine may cause damage to the machine and/or may result in
unsatisfactory print quality. Our warranty coverage does not apply to
any problem that is caused by the use of unauthorized third party toner
and/or cartridges. To protect your investment and obtain premium
performance from the Brother machine, we strongly recommend the use of
Genuine Brother Supplies.

2. Make sure that you are using the correct drum and toner cartridge(s)
for your machine. The part numbers for your model are as follows:
NOTE: Some cartridges can look EXACTLY the same among different models
and will fit the machine even if they are not designed for use in that
model. Verify the part number before using the cartridge(s).

TN550: Toner cartridge (standard)
TN580: Toner cartridge (high yield)
DR520 = Drum unitt.

3. Make sure that the cartridge is not damaged. Remove the toner
cartridge by following the steps listed below:

a. Press the cover release button and then open the front cover.

b. Remove the old drum unit and toner cartridge assembly. Place it on a
drop cloth or disposable paper to avoid scattering toner.
NOTE: Be careful not to spill the toner. If toner gets on your
clothes or hands, wipe or wash it off immediately with cold water.

c. Hold down the blue lock lever on the right and pull the toner
cartridge out of the drum unit.

d. Look at the toner cartridge and see if any parts or pieces appear to
be broken or missing, if so, the cartridge may be defective and should
be replaced.

4. If the toner cartridge is not damaged, reinstall it into the drum
unit. If it was damaged, use a new toner cartridge and reinstall it into
the drum unit.

5. Reset the drum/toner unit into the machine.

6. Close the front cover.

7. If the message "Toner Error' continues to appear on the display
unplug the machine from the wall outlet.

8. Open the front cover and remove the drum and toner assembly.

9. Look inside where the drum was. On the left side wall, look for a
small, black plastic lever/actuator. A flashlight may help see it.

10. Using the palm of your hand, slide it along the left wall in and
out a few times as this may free up the actuator/lever in case it is
stuck. The actuator/lever is spring loaded and needs to move back and
spring forward to operate correctly.

If the lever does not move, spring back or is missing and your machine
is within warranty, you can locate a Brother Authorized Service Center
(ASC) in your area or contact Brother Customer Service by calling
1-877-Brother (1-877-276-8437) Monday through Friday, excluding
holidays. If the machine is out of warranty, you can locate a Brother
Authorized Service Center using the information listed above.

If the lever moves freely and springs back to its original position
continue to Step 11.

11. Reinstall the drum and toner assembly, close the front cover and
plug the machine in.

SOURCE: HL-2040 CHANGE TONER

I just had the same problem and fixed it. Hold down the blue "go" and red "job cancel" buttons at the same time for a few seconds. The printer churns into action and the green status light goes on. I was able then to print.

Our Brother HL4040CN is saying "drum error slide the green tab on drum unit in each color" How do you do this

The green tab referred to on the drum unit slides a thin wire across the drum to scrape off any built-up toner that has accumulated.

To do this, first open the door to access the toner/drum cartridges (it's the same door you'd open to replace a spent cartridge). Remove one of the cartridges; the inside of the door will have a sticker illustrating the exact steps to do this. Once you've removed a cartridge, look to the end that is inserted first when installing it (the end opposite the one grasped to remove the cartridge). You should see a small green tab here. Slide it left and right several times to clear away any blockage. For good measure, vigorously shake the cartridge side to side to evenly redistribute the remaining toner evenly inside the cartridge. Replace the cartridge and repeat these steps for each one remaining.

If you still get an error after following these steps, remove each cartridge and shake it extra vigorously for at least 10 seconds. Sometimes the toner can clump inside the cartridge, causing the printer to interpret it as a blockage. This is especially likely to occur if you live in an area with a humid environment.

HOW TO REMOVE TONER CARTRIDGE TO REPLACE WITH NEW ONE

Hi,

1. Grasp the front cover of the printer and pull it toward you to open the toner door. Reach into the printer and grab the combined toner cartridge/drum assembly. Lift up slightly and pull it out of the front of the printer.

2. Place the cartridge and drum on a paper towel, spare sheet of paper, rag or other surface that can get dirty. Loose toner particles may spill from the cartridge.

3. Press the blue locking lever on the cartridge/drum unit to unlock the toner cartridge from the drum. Lift the toner cartridge up and away from the drum unit. Dispose of the old toner cartridge in accordance with your local regulations. Seal it in a plastic bag to keep loose toner from spilling.

4. Gently shake your new toner cartridge back and forth a few times to distribute the toner evenly across the width of the cartridge. Remove the plastic protective cover from the bottom of the cartridge.

5. Place the new toner cartridge onto the drum unit and press it down gently until it locks into place. The blue locking lever will automatically click into place. Verify that the toner cartridge is securely connected to the drum.

6. Locate the corona wire cleaner tab at the front of the drum unit. Slide it back and forth several times to improve the print quality of the drum. Set the tab back in the home position when finished.

7. Slide the combined toner cartridge/drum unit back into the printer and close the front cover.

How to Change a Toner Cart in a Brother HL 2040

The Brother HL 2040 laser printer has a toner cartridge that supplies toner to the drum assembly so that the printer can print properly. To change the drum you have to slide the plattened cover to the left, like you do when removing a paper jam, open the top cover, you will see a handle that you pull to remove the defeloping and drum unit, remove the drum and def unit.
The drum is attached by two clips on top of def unit, unlock the drum from the def by releasing that clips, slide te drum protecktion plate to the rear and remove the drum.insert the new drum by reversing this steps.
If your image of your copies is not bad you can remove the waste toner in the drum unit before replacing it.On top of the drum there are two plugs open them and remove the waste toner, make sure you remove all of the waste toner. Then that message will go away.

TROUBLESHOOT

Waste toner is what gets scraped off the drum after the paper has passed. It eventually fills up inside a compartment in the drum. The drum is the unit that slides into the copier and the toner slides into the drum. In this type of copier it is meant for a technician to order and replace this drum. Try where you bought the copier from.
