Re: television cutting out

These two problems may not be related; the first is either a reaction of an overvoltage protection circuit that monitors the ~ 25kv supplied to the CRT or the sign of a decaying component, most likely an electroytic capacitor.
Sometimes, this component can be seen to be failing by a bulge on the top (or end, if horizontal) of the package or the appearance of a crusty desposit around the seal.

The second problem is probably coming from a failed or fractured solder joint, often called a 'cold' solder joint.
These quite often respond to mechanical jarring or disturbance of the board on which it occurs.
Looking for these without signal tracing capabilities can be a lifetime task.

Labor charges in both cases (if you still have a shop around) could be a significant amount.

Try unplugging it for 30 seconds and see if it resets. If not, take the model # and get on the internet for the manual and go to trouble shooting page. It should answer your questions

I have a sony tv I belive it a 55 inch and when I turn it on it stay on for a frew min than it cuts off than it turn on again and then it cuts off it keeps doing this until I turn it off what the problem...

It's got a bad board and needs a visit to a service center. Either the sleep timer is always engaged due to a board error, or it's got a diode overheating, or a capacitor breaking down. Regardless, it's generally worth fixing.

The tv keeps cutting off. I have checked to make sure that the sleep and timer is oof but the tv still keeps cutting off. it cuts off sometimes every 5 min, and sometimes every hour or two.

Hi William,
If you have necessary tools and test instruments, and know safety precaution in basic troubleshooting, I would advice you to check/replace the electrolytic capacitor in the power supply section, this cap malfunction and produce out-of-regulation which sense by the feedback circuitry and turn the unit into subsequent shutdown. Also, look for a bad solder joints on the board., it will do the same thing. Secondary reasons of symptom is Voltage Regulator IC, and microcontroller circuitry.
If you can't do the job yourself, I would advice you to look for a technician to isolate the faulty parts.
Hope I helped you.
Have a nice day!
Thanks for using Fixya.

TV cuts off w/o warning & power red light blinks continuously. Can cut TV back on but will cut off again. Sometimes it does this every few minutes and sometimes, especially in the evening, it will...

This may seem like silly answers but...
1. Be sure the power supply is plugged in all the way and that it is not damaged anywhere on the cord all the way up to the TV.
2. Be sure the Sleep Timer is not activated. You wouldn't believe how many times this is actually the case.
If these end up not the case then it is very possible that the safety circuitry in your TV's board could be going out. The TV is shutting it down due to it finding a problem with the circuitry in the TV. Most of the time people choose to replace the TV with a newer model as it is just cheaper to replace it than to have it repaired. This usually only happens in older TV's although I have seen it in TV's as little as 4 years old.

Hi power transformer is going bad..probably full of dust and/or melting from use. Don't waste money on repairs as it'll cost you more than the TV's worth.

Toshiba TV picture has shifted high

if it cannot be adjusted then there is a problem in tv. your problem is in vertical output circuit Can this be corrected easily ? yes or do I need to start looking for a new TV? I love this one and would like to keep it a while longer. not to look for new will keep it for longer that has a picture that recently shifted upward and now cuts off about 1 inch of the top of the picture. Otherwise it functions properly. your problem is in vertical output circuit please check 1loose contact in vertical output section 2 capacitor defective in v/output. it is a common problem. it is a not a major problem. if you are not tech person get it done by skilled tech. hope this will help.
