He is right . the needle always goes up even a small amount, we tune around 1.0  check patch lead or is there anything else that could be calling you problems. eg a mast or an internal problem. the radioshack has a battery that leaks and cause the same problem.

Ant light comes on when talking on cb

Check your antenna connections, Make sure they are clean and tight. Check your SWR, the built in swr meter is calibrated to turn the AWI light on if the SWR is 2.0 or higher. Check the coax wire for breaks, make sure it is not being crushed in a door, trunk lid etc.

I have a connex 33tlm3 works good whith litllie ant squels whith big could something be tuned up to much

Hi jeremy, my name is John. Welcome to FixYa. I think you are saying you are trying two different antenna,s. With the big one, sounds like you have a high SWR. or a bad ground. Make sure that your antenna is grounded good and nothing is blocking it. You will need a SWR meter and a three foot jumper to check this. How to check this is take one end of the coax jumper and run it to the radio and the other end to the meter where it is marked radio. Now take the antenna and put it in the other fitting marked ANT. Set the dial on the meter to SWR SET then turn off all your modulation,MIC GAIN, POWER MIC, now key the MIC and adjust the needle where it says calibrate all the way to the edge of the scale, not going past the edge, with the MIC still keyed up, turn the switch to SWR. that reading you see on the scale is your SWR. If it reads a three (3) or over, it is to high. Depending on your antenna, there are adjustments. Thanks for choosing FixYa...John

Radio comes on but cant hear others talking

Is the antenna plugged in?
Is the antenna propperly checked with an SWR meter?
Have you tried turning the squelch back? (squelch on)
Have you check the microphone connections? (is the microphone dodgy?)

This radio has swr meter

S.W.R == Standing Wave Ratio, this is a Relative measurement of the Amount of Power Going UP the Antenna, Versus the Amount of power being "Reflected" Down, the Antenna. This ratio, is displayed, as a reading on the meter. Also Often this SWR meter is dual used as an "S" Meter, this is used ti display relative signal levels from other transmitters. and is shown, as an "S" Scale. 0 - 9 on the meter.

Power meter on my dx-979 barely moves off of 0 when transmitting the swr meter also hovers around 1.0 no matter what channel...not used to seeing such low swr readings and almost nothing on the power...

I would check the radio with an external meter to see if it is the transmitter or the Meter in the radio. If it is the meter in the radio it could have a bad detection Diode or just oout of adjustment or even a bad calibration pot. other wise start looking to fix your transmitter like finals or other similar problem.

My radio is recieving a signal from other cber's but i don't think they can hear me

Go on a channel where people are talking and when some one stops transmitting key up and say, "breaker breaker, can I have a radio check please?"

that is how you call for a radio check to see if people can hear you.

breaker breaker, or break break means kind of like, "excuse me, I would like to talk on the channel please."

If they hear you the will most likey say, "its working." or "Checks in the mail." You can then ask them after that how the radio sounds.

Also make sure your mic gain is up.

If you get no response then there may be another problem. Make sure you followed the instructions that came with the radio on how to tune your antenna for best SWR. This is important.

TO SETUP MY SWR, SHOULD I USE THE METER IN THE RADIO OR AN EXTERNAL SWR METER . THE SET IS THE NEW 29LTD BT. ALSO AT TIMES THE ANT LITE COMES ON WHEN TRANSMITTING. IS THIS NORMAL?

Always use an external meter to set SWR. If the ant. warning light comes on it indicates a problem with the SWR. Check it with external meter.

Hi,

If by calibration, you are referring to the check if your antenna is tuned, below information may be of help.
S/RF/SWR/CAL SWITCH. When in the S/RF position, the meter swings
proportionally to the strength of the received signal. When transmitting,
the meter indicates relative RF output power.
When in the "CAL" position, the SWR meter can be calibrated by adjusting
the "SWR CAL" control to the "CAL" mark on the meter face.
When in the "SWR" position, the standing wave ratio is measured.

SWR METER. Measures standing wave ratio of the antenna system.
Used to properly adjust the length of the antenna and to monitor the
quality of the coaxial cable and all RF electrical connections. If there is any
degradation whatsoever in any of the foregoing, due to humidity, salt
spray, vibration or corrosion, the SWR meter reading will rise, thereby
indicating that a problem exists.
To calibrate, switch to the "CAL" position, transmit by pressing the mike
switch, and adjust the SWR control to the "CAL" mark on the meter; then
switch to "SWR" position for the SWR measurement.

If however you are referring to the internal calibration or tuning of the transmit and receive sections, you would need several instruments/equipment such as RF generator (0-30Mhz with 1Khx modulation), Spectrum Analyzer, Modulation Scope, Dummy Loaded Wattmeter, Frequency Meter and some others. These of course are not readily available to the average user.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.
