Question about Hitachi 50V500 50 in. HD-Ready LCD Television

Hitachi 50v500 Similar to many others I have seen I also have a pinkish hue in the middle of the tv. I thought it was a bad color engine but I am questioning my diagnosis. It sound like it might just be reseting some settings or keying in some numbers on the controler

Re: hitachi 50v500

The problem your having is a light engine defect. Nothing you do to the TV will fix it...just makes it worse. Here's our story...Reader's Digest version. We had the same infamous "red cloud" pop up in the middle of our TV. We have the 60v500 and after lots of research online, we felt like we knew what the problem was. We called Hitachi's customer relations department and they acted like they had never heard of this however, they gave us the name of a certified tech in our area that came out and in less than a minute, told us that it was a light engine defect and that Hitachi DOES know about it. I called Hitachi the following day and they told me that they would call the dealer to verify the diagnois and call me back.

Within 2 hours they called and sent a brand new $1500 light engine to the dealer. The dealer came out the next day, replaced the defective part and the TV is like brand new!

Here's the kicker...they will pay for the part, but they ask you to pay for the install. Our install cost $400. It was worth it to us because we paid $3600 for this TV 3+ years ago and aside from this problem, we've loved this TV. Again, keep in mind that when you call them and tell them that you know it's a light engine defect, they will act like they have no idea what you're talking about. After you have someone out to confirm it, they will all of a sudden step up to the plate and send out the new part.

Please call the Customer Relations Department and not customer service. Customer Service will have you chasing your to speak. the Customer Relations Department # is 800-654-7013. Good Luck!

Center of tv, red blurry

We had this same problem with our 60+ inch Hitachi. I actually came on this website to see what other people did about this. You have a defective light engine which is a known problem that Hitachi tv's have, but it can be fixed with a little effort from you, the consumer. There are several forums on here that relate to this problem, but I will tell you about my experience.

About 2 years after we bought our tv the red hue appeared in the very center of the screen. At first it wasn't really a problem because the only time you could really notice it was when the screen was pitch black, which wasn't very often... So as the next two years went by it got worse and worse. This summer (four years after we purchased the tv) it reached its peak.

Our bulb blew at the beginning of the summer so that made us think it was the source of the red hue. We ordered a new bulb and replaced the old one. The picture was even worse afterwards. Not only was the red hue covering almost the entire screen now, but a blue hue joined it. So the mix of colors on the screen distorted the picture so badly it looked like we were watching tv on an old, blurry screen. We play a lot of video games on our hitachi and even in 1080p format the picture was awful. While playing a video game, the middle of the screen would be so blurry and mixed with weird colors you couldn't even tell what you were doing.

We got to the point were it was unbearable to watch the screen so I looked on this website for tips and here is the process I went through.

I called Hitachi's Customer Relations Department (not customer service) at 800-654-7013. They asked me for the serial numbers on the tv and when I purchased the tv, etc. So have all that information handy when you make the call. I told them about the red hue that had developed and also the blue hue. I said that I researched the problem on the internet and I know that I have a bad light engine. That is when they got really defensive...

I told them that I know they know about the light engine problem with their tv's and that I want it fixed. They guy cocked an attitude and preceded to tell me that my television was five years old and that they usually can't do anything for a television that is that old unless I have had previous problems with the tv (which I haven't). He said, "We can not do anything for you especially since your tv is out of warranty." Then I said, "So I paid over $5000 for a tv that lasted me 4 years and you are telling me that is an acceptable lifetime for a tv of that quality and price?" The guy was speechless then. I told him that I wanted the name of a Hitachi repair center in my area. He gave me the number and told me to call back with their diagnosis.

I called the repair center and told them about the situation. They had obviously dealt with this problem before and told me their usual labor rates for light engine repairs, etc. The center I went through does not send technicians out to houses, they only look at tvs in their repair center so I scheduled to have the tv picked up and looked at (Which means I also had to pay a total delivery fee to/from my house of $75). After it was picked up, I called Hitachi back and told them that the technician had it and they could call the repair center on monday to talk to a technician. Hitachi will only send the part if the technician verifies it. I tried just telling them myself but they said they have to personally talk to the technician.

After the technician verified with Hitachi that it was the light engine, Hitachi sent them the part, FREE OF CHARGE! It is a $1200 part but Hitachi knows that it was designed incorrectly in the first place so if you call and give them a hard time about it they will get you the newly designed part for free. Since my tv is out of warranty I had to pay the labor fees for the repair center ($300) but the part was free. I had a total delivery + labor fee of $375. I have read that if your tv is still in warranty you will pay nothing.

Don't let their customer service representitives scare you away with their arguments. You are the consumer and they have to fix your tv no matter what. They will try lots of tricks and arguments to try and get out of paying for the part, but just stick to the process and Hitachi will pay for it. Also, once they know that you had the techinician look at it and it is the light engine they get a lot friendlier because there is no getting out of it then... haha.

It is a long process, but it is definitely worth it. My tv is finally being delivered to my house from the repair center this coming Wednesday morning, just in time for Thanksgiving! I haven't seen the picture yet, but I am told by others that the tv is just like new. If you have any other questions let me know.

Blue half moon shadow on top of screen

We had this same problem with our 60+ inch Hitachi. Except our tv had a red hue in the center of the tv before we replaced the bulb and then the blue hue joined the red one after the replacement. It ended up that our light engine was defective (which is an extremely common problem in Hitachi tvs). You should read through some of the forums on here to see if you can find your solution exactly (that is how I figured out my problem was our light engine). You might have the light engine problem also, but I am not sure since you don't have a red hue. Hitachi pays for the replacement light engine part (worth $1200). I just finished the process and now my tv is like new. If you want me to go more in-depth with the light engine repair process let me know.

Color correction

You can try complaining to Hitachi, but they won't admit to a problem. A new light engine is necessary as this is what they describe as "a technical issue" with this type of TV.
It will cost upwards of $600.00. Good luck, the more complaints they get, the better. I would never recommend a Hitachi to a friend (or enemy) after the treatment I recieved from the customer service reps.

TV Problem

It is a failure in the light engine itself. You will need to have it replaced. Here is a link to that rather costly part.
