Question about Desa International CBP20T Wall Mounted Panel Heater

1 Answer

Wmn20a ODORS We had a 6-9,000 BTU unit in the basement of our last house for years w/o problems. The smallest heater I could find after we moved into a different house was this 20,000 BTU unit at Wal-Mart. Installed easily (I have done this before) using 1/2" CSST and a shut-off valve below the unit. Everything works fine, but it produces a fairly strong odor that is NOT gas. no yellow flames, plenty of air, plenty of gas pressure. Any suggestions? Thanks, GN

We have only had it installed for two days. Odor does not seem to be going away. Is smells like you are running a Kerosene heater, even with only the pilot lit. The other one we had did not smell like this.

How long have you been using it? Could it be that finish residue (like paint, oil) is just burning off -- and after that's done no more odor?

How long has the unit been running for? sometimes with these newer heating elements it takes a while to burn off the oils used to make them.

SOURCE: lights, goes out in a minute

a orange-yellow flame means that your not getting enough oxygen to your flame... for every cubic foot of gas you need 24 cubic feet of air to burn

Contact your Gas company tell them you have a foul smell coming in when you turn on the heater. They typically wont charge for a technician to come out and inspect the heater for you.

I'm considering installing a Goodman LP Gas Furnace:sizing? Ops?

Gerge, if you go to website www.energycodes.gov
you can do a heat load calc yourself. Basically, you figure out the sizes of walls, total area of glass. total doors to outside, ceiling area and types of building materials used. It is pretty easy and then you will know for sure. The contractor should be suppling you with one but if not use this, it is free!

You might have a slight odor of gas when the burner first ignites. Some gas does escape before it completely ignites. It shouldn't smell after 2 years of use. If you can see the pilot flame burning from the top of the heater, the heater pilot assembly is pushed over too far. The pilot fumes could be escaping in the room and cause a smell.

Error code 12

Error code 12 is a genaric "Flame Failure" code. I suspect that the flame is not hitting the flame sensor or that the sensor is bad. You will need to get to the sensor located on the far left hand side of the unit. If you have the owners manual, it's part #123. Remove it and clean it off. Make sure it is placed back in the heater properly aligned and all the way in. Then try and light it. If it does not stay lit, it may need to be replaced but check out the burner tray for debris not allowing the flame to travel all the way to the sensor. You will have to remove many parts to get to the burner assembly.
