Question about Western Digital 250GB MyBook External USB 2.0 250 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

WD USB drive (250GB) worked on PC, then used on Mac, now not PC!

This drive worked fine on my PC. USB powered. 250GB.

Used it on a Mac. Didn't add or remove any files. May have disconnected without proper eject.

When plugging in to PC it makes the 'My Computer' file run very slowly and, when the drive is picked up, doesn't seem to display what's on it (and when trying to access it the whole PC runs slowly).

You can try few options, first try on a nohter pc with windows & see if it's fast, also if there is less data, backup & try a format.

The drive would have to be formatted in order for the mac to use it. Then you'd lose all your photos. The drive can either work on the PC or work on the Mac. They are two different animals.

If they plugged it into a WinPC, the PC won't be able to read the drive.
More then likely the SATA-to-USB card in the drive has gone bad (like mine did.)
I ended up buying a rocketfish 2.5" SATA HD enclosure kit from BestBuy... now my drive works fine.
Good Luck!

USB hard drive not recognized by Mac and by PC

Does the external drive work when connected to some _other_ computer? (Friend? Office? Home?)

It could be a failure either in the "hardware" inside the external-case (the USB adapter & interface)
or in the disk-drive "inside" the external-case.

So, a qualified technician can open the external drive, remove the disk-drive, and connect it directly to a computer, to see if the files can be "directly" read from the disk-drive.

If not, then you should search online for a "data recovery" service -- they are expensive, but they physically repair a damaged disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your data to another disk-drive.

Lacie 250GB External Hardive to be used between a PC and a MAC

Be carefull when moving data from Macs to Windows etc. Your best bet would be to start again. It should work if you get your friend to put the data on the drive & copy it directly to your Mac. From there, you can safely copy data to the PC, but may have trouble accessing that same data after the PC has had it.
