have one black and one color cartridge in my printer but it keeps giving me an error message:

  • kathyd913 Nov 27, 2007

I get the same message. I spent a morning with HP online tech support, and after all their diagnostics and suggestions to fix it, they tried to sell me the new model of printer for $399. The little metal clip (looks like a opened up paper clip) inside the right cartridge compartment will not stay seated properly. I put in back in place and secured it with a bit of superglue, but apparently that wasn't the problem, since it still won't recognize the black cartridge. Is it time to give up, or any other suggestions?

New Black Cartridge is not being recognized by printer.

  • Anonymous Apr 08, 2008

I'm getting the message "check black cartridge, etc" and the printer will not copy, fax etc. I tried:

    1. Shutting down and re-starting

    2. New Cartridge

    3. Cleaning it with canned air

    4. Cleaning the stall and the cartridge with warm water

    Nothing worked!

Did everything that kathyd913 did, plus now cartridge, cleaned contacts on cartridge and printer, rebooted printer, etc. Any other suggestions?

Please unplug the printer from the wall. Now remove the power brick from the back of the printer for 60 seconds. Now plug everything back in. This will reset any error messages the printer has. Welcome to Fixya

This means the the printer cannot determine which cartridge is causing the error. Make sure that you are using original HP cartridges.

Please see troubleshooting procedure below:
  1. Remove the color cartridge from the left stall (which has a blue latch) and refasten the latch. Leave the other cartridge in place.
  2. Close the printer, wait 10 to 15 seconds, then look at the LCD display.
    • If the LCD display reads Insert Color Cartridge in Left Stall , the color cartridge may be causing the problem. Follow the steps below:
      1. Clean the color cartridge contacts. Click here to see how.
      2. Reinsert the color cartridge into the carriage and close the blue latch.
      3. Close the printer and wait 10 to 15 seconds.
      4. If the LCD display reads Remove and Check Print Cartridges , replace the color cartridge.
    • If the LCD display reads Remove and Check Print Cartridges , follow the steps below:
      1. Reinsert the color cartridge.
      2. Remove the black or photo cartridge, depending on which one is installed in the right stall. The right stall has the gray latch. Be sure to refasten the latch on the empty stall.
      3. Clean the black or photo cartridge contacts.
      4. Reinsert the black or photo cartridge.
      5. Close the printer and wait 10 to 15 seconds.
      6. If the LCD display reads Remove and Check Print Cartridges , replace the black or photo cartridge.
  3. If replacing cartridges fails to correct the problem, click the link at the top of this page to contact HP.
