I'd say you have a problem. The clicking sound is likely a thermal overload from too much current being drawn and the temp rising.
Once it cools off a little it tries again; draws too much currrent, heats up and the thermal overload kicks it off again.

It could blow the breaker as well, it just hasn't yet. Probably because there isn't a short circuit, just thermal overload from too much current for too long. It's a built in safety device internal to the pump motor.

My guess is the pump is bad -- and either the impellers are shot or a bearing is bad.

It would be nice if you could manually turn the pump shaft and see if it feels stiff or it makes unusual grinding noises, but you probably can't get to it.

I'd also guess that a pump repair is not cost effective, 'cause if the pump is that worn, fixing it will only keep it going 'till the next odd-ball thing goes wrong with it.

good luck

It is very good that you found this problem. An arcing wire, if it goes long enough will result in a large spark and possibly a fire.

I have run across two dryers with badly fastened wires, and both of them had burnt wiring that had to be replaced.

    congrats!

Overheating hayward super pump

Superpumps have been a workhorse in the industry for decades. Your results are highly unusual. The motors that run these pumps have bee manufactured by Century/Magnetek and A.O. Smith for the past 20+ years. These same motors power the vast majority of pumps built by a wide range of pool pump manufacturers. (They are not Hayward specific)
You may want to get a second opinion from another electrician, or call out a pool pro to check out the installation to see what could be causing these frequent failures. This is WAY abnormal.

PUMP RUNS A FEW SECONDS THEN CLICKS OFF

Verify that your voltage is correct, then check your amps. It sounds like you have a short in the windings causing the motor to overheat. This usually mean replacement. (the repair would be almost as much as a new motor)

Is there an advantage to a 2 speed over a regular 1.5 Hayward motor?

It cost's more and thats it unless you have the switching to run it. If so you can use low speed to clean and heat to save money on your elect. bill.

New hayward 1 HP super pump runs 1 or 2 seconds, then shuts off. After 1 or 2 minutes, will come on for 1 or 2 seconds, then shuts off again

Check that the motor is set for the proper voltage. They are usually factory connected for 230V and if you have a 115V line feeding it the motor will overheat and cycle the overload as you describe.

Why is my pump cutting off and on every 5-10 seconds?
  • Hayward motors are factory wired for 240 volts unless the motor is 120 volts ONLY. Check the voltage of the incoming supply power and ensure the motor is wired or can be wired for this voltage (data plate on motor will help provide voltage and wiring information). Also check for loose or badly connected wires. Contact a certified electrician for repair.
