What direction should pulley turn ?

I'm putting a new electric motor on an old compressor. Is there a way to determine the intended direction of rotation ? Or does it even matter.

Which way does it spin?

Put it on. The big pulley is also a big fan. So it should blow air on the pumping unit. This is it. If it spins in the wrong direction change the polarity. If you look close you should see somvere a rotation direction indicator .

Compressor belt squeals

Turn the compressor off, and check the sides of the belt that touch the pulleys. If the surface of the sides of the belt are shiny and slick, replace the belt (bring the old belt to any auto parts store and match it up to a new belt). To remove the old belt, check the mounting point of the motor, and mark where the edge of the motor mount meets the deck. Loosen the motor mounting bolts and slide the motor toward the compressor. Remove the old belt and install the new one. When you put the new belt on, make sure the tension is correct. slide the compressor motor away from the compressor and tighten the mounting belts. (At the center point between the pulleys, the belt should only deflect 3/8 to 1 1/2" when you push downward with about 8 pounds of pressure, (the general rule is 1/4 inch deflection per inch of belt between the pulleys.

I have a IR air compressor 30T Series with no motor, pump model number 253-7D. I need to know what size electric motor to put on it.

You can use a range of motors from 5hp electric to 10 - 13 hp gas. Depends more your output requirements. Need lots of air, turn fast, not so much as small shop, turn slower. Just watch min and max rpm and direction. Adjust load on the motor with pulley size. Lots of information about this pump at and also at I have a Quincy 325 running at only 500 rpm with 5hp motor gives me plenty of air but could use larger motor and turn maybe 900 rpm for super quick shut off (seems like a waste for me). Good luck with your project.

I have a model VT 618902aj, its from 1996. What are the pulley sizes supposed to be? Is this unit matched with the present unit mentioned? Thank you

The pulley on the compessor only came in one size ~ about 10 inch. The motor size pulley would depend on the speed of the motor. To get a good volume of air, the pump needs to turn about 800 to 1000 rpm(most pumps have max rpm at that range, good idea to check ). Gas engine turns at 3000 ~ 3600 rpm so use about 3" pully or determine by counting the number of turns of motor/engine to make one revolution of the pump. Electric motors will turn 3450 or 1725. Choose pulley to turn pump at desired speed below max pump rpm and capacity of the motor.

Can you put a bigger Hp and a smalll plully onit

There are quite a few variations of motor and pulley combinations. You can change the motor and pulley based on your needs, however do not over-clock the recommended rpm or the pump. Check the specifications of the pump to determine the max rpm . Usually the pulley on the motor will depend on the rpm of the motor. Check the rpm of the present motor to determing the rpm of the pump with current set-up, and compare to the motor you are considering. Motor rpm vary from around 850 to 3450 so pulley size is quite important. Good holidays

Which direction should my compressor motor be turning when looking at it from the shaft or pulley side side?

Easy to tell which direction motor should turn. Look at the flywheel of the pump it will have an arrow showing direction. Secondly, the pump has fins that need to turn in direction to blow air onto pump. Good luck

Buy a whole new clutch for about $200. You need a special puller to remove the old one if you intend to refurbish it. It's not worth the effort. Just remove the clips and knock the old one off with a hammer. Chuck it away and replace with a brand new clutch assembly.

Motor pulley for an old Ingersoll Rand type 30 compressor

Here is a link to Ingersoll-Rand (compressed air division) where you can find a local distributor. I think a call to a parts tech might provide the original motor sheave outside diameter and belt size (I'm suspecting "A" or "B" size).

With that info, here is a link to a good industrial source for your new motor sheave (McMaster-Carr):

Their prices aren't so bad.
You may also have a local industrial sales in your area.
I hope this helps you... Nice compressor!

Correct rotation of copressor

Checked all the IR compressors in stock and all turn counter-clockwise facing pulley, however you could check the pump for fan angle on pulley. The fan on the compressor pulley blows air towards the pump. Generally, pumps turn CC because that would allow for the use of gasoline engines which all turn CC. Please email you questions, and Good Luck.
