It sounds like the black ink cartridge is not working and the color cartridge is trying to mix to make black. The color cartridge sounds like it is out of red also.

Black cartridge problem device documentation. HP Officejet 4500

This type of HP 901 ink cartridge error ("Refer to Device Documentation", etc.) condition is likely an internal micro-electronic failure inside the HP 901 (or 901XL) black ink cartridge. These failures typically occur due to natural degradation of internal micro-electronics over time and can occur with brand new ink cartridges.

To confirm root cause and check the internal electrical condition of both black and color ink cartridges, please execute the 'Tap 41' cartridge's electrical diagnostic test below (refer to procedure B).

CAUTION: Be advised, the use of remanufactured ink cartridges is considered somewhat unreliable since the cartridges are already on their 3rd life when purchased new (off the internet or at select retailer stores). As well, the use of compatible/clone cartridges (i.e. sold thru the internet from China) are known to be problematic and may cause printer errors.

NOTE 1: Unfortunately, alignment pages and internal self test prints will usually print Ok even if the cartridge is internally electrically damaged. Do not use these test pages as a proxy for determining whether a cartridge is good or bad, only the 'Tap 41/43' diagnostic test report can yield this information.

DIAGNOSTIC CHECKS:

A. Ensure BOTH carriage/flex cables and BOTH ink cartridge contacts are thoroughly clean before proceeding: http://inkjet411.com/?page_id=1519

B. Validate the cartridge's electrical health by running the 'Tap 41' diagnostics test. Refer to 2nd video procedure at the following link on how to activate and read the service test: http://inkjet411.com/?page_id=620

a. Load Letter/A4-size paper into paper feed tray.
b. If any lights are blinking, first press Cancel to attempt to clear.
c. Press the * and # keys simultaneously.
d. Enter 124 at keypad. The 'Underware' menu should be displayed.
e. Use the arrow keys to navigate to the System Menu. Select Ok.
f. Use the arrow keys to navigate to the 'print-mech tap test'. Select Ok. Printer screen should display "code = 0".
g. Use the arrow keys to enter "code = 41" (or just enter 41 on keypad). Select Ok. The Tap 41 diagnostic test pattern prints.

--- Providing the HP 901 (or 901XL) color cartridge is partially functioning the Tap 41 diagnostic test print will be printed (this is a forced service print test which is mainly used for the evaluation of ink cartridge electrical health - the printer will attempt to print the diagnostic test print). A good HP 901 color cartridge should display 1248 good nozzles, while a good HP 901/901XL black ink cartridge should show 336 good nozzles. If the results yield anything different then the ink cartridge is likely damaged and will need to be replaced. Refer to 2nd video on how to read the diagnostic test print: http://inkjet411.com/?page_id=620

---- If the printer attempts to print the diagnostic test pattern (1 page) then the printer is generally considered operational and functional, if nothing is printed, but the printer attempts to print the pattern, then the tri-color ink cartridge is either empty, clogged or severely electrically damaged (black ink cartridge is not used). You can remove the tri-color cartridge, reactivate the tap 41 test and the printer will print the diagnostic test print in black ink.

Hopefully this helps....

Cannot make the printer work after I changed the ink cartridges?

You can validate the HP60 ink cartridge's electrical health by running the 'Tap 41' diagnostics test (this procedure is specific to the F2480 model). Refer to DIAGNOSTIC TAP 41 video procedure at the following link on how to activate and read the service test: http://inkjet411.com/?page_id=440

1. While holding the Power button, press Cancel (X) button 4 times, then press the Color Copy button once.
2. Release the Power button.
3. The 'Tap 41' diagnostic test print should print.

--- Providing the color cartridge is partially functioning the Tap 41 diagnostic test print will be printed (this is a forced service print test which is mainly used for the evaluation of ink cartridge electrical health). A good HP 60/60XL color cartridge should display 1248 good nozzles, while a good HP 60/60XL black ink cartridge should show 336 good nozzles. If the results yield anything different then the ink cartridge is likely damaged and will need to be replaced. Refer to video on how to read the printout. http://inkjet411.com/?page_id=434

You can perform the Tap 41 Cartridge Health Diagnostics Test: [applies to HP Deskjet 6800/6900/9800]
http://inkjet411.com/?page_id=1741 (refer to 2nd video to understand how to read the printed pattern)

1. With printer power on, press and hold the POWER button.
2. Press the Cancel (X) button four (4) times.
3. Press the RESUME button (Down Arrow) once.
4. Release the POWER button.
5. The Diagnostic Test Report should print.

--- A good HP 93/95/97/99 color cartridge should display 600 good nozzles, while a good HP 92/94/96/98 black ink cartridge should show 672 good nozzles. If the results yield anything different then the ink cartridge is likely damaged and will need to be replaced. Refer to 2nd video on how to read the printout: http://inkjet411.com/?page_id=1741

I have rectently replaced the inks, but it wont print the black parts, any solution?

If you are having issues on an HP officejet printer, go to the menu, click "Diagnostics," then print the "PQ Troubleshooting Pages." If black ink does not print, go to "Disable the Cartridge" and switch the magenta and black cartridges on the menu. Then, print the pages again. If black ink does not print, then the problem may be the toner cartridge.

Why is my printer not printing black and white photos...I get green prints. Recently loaded new black in and still getting green

Go to printer settings and locate the "Print in greyscale" menu, and select "Black Ink Only" as shown below, 04223f5.jpg

(Please note that this is only when you need to print black and white, you have to select "Print in Color" when you are going to print color documents.) Hope this helps, Good luck. Thanks for using FixYa.

Canon i250, black text won't print, but ok with nozzle check

Canon i250. Instructions on this website solved the problem of flashing green and orange lights, but now the black won't print. Changed ink cartridges, but still no print. Did a diagnostic nozzle check, and the black DID print. What do I do now?

Kodak Easyshare 5300 printer will not print black

Print a self test diagnostic page to check the status of the black ink and print heads.

To print the self-test diagnostic page

Control panel: Press (Configuration Page button), or press and hold the (Cancel button) for 3 seconds.

For models that support networks: Press (Configuration Page button).

If these are all showing OK then clean the printheads

To clean the printheads
If printed characters are incomplete, or dots or lines are missing from printouts, ink nozzles might be clogged and you might need to clean the printheads.

NOTE: Cleaning uses ink, so clean the printheads only when necessary.

The cleaning process takes up to 3.5 minutes. Some noise might be generated in the process.
Control panel: Press and hold (Power button), press (Cancel button) two times, press (Resume button) one time, and release (Power button).

If this fails then replace the black cartridge and run a clean cycle again and then a self test diagnostic then try printing again.

I was printing the other day and each page got lighter and lighter and now it doesn't print anything in black. There's ink in it and I turned off the printer. What else do I need to do to get it to print...

How long has it been since you printer prior to the other day ? If you do not use your printer for some time, the ink will dry out even if it's a new cartridge.

Black ink not working

Your black ink printer head might be blocked by dried materials. Try to open your printers maintenance software and execute head cleaning procedures. Try to print a test page after every head cleaning or you may run print head diagnostics. If the black ink still doesn't print, try to use another black ink cartridge and compare with initial results.
