Question about Whirlpool Refrigerators

1 Answer

Water pooling inside fridge. Otherwise, unit seems to be working fine. Unit was manufactured in 1997. Is a model ET21PKXFW01. Suspect it is a failure somewhere in the "frostfree" feature. My guess is that the frost melts but isn't evaporating and leaks down into the fridge.  Is this something I can fix myself?

There is no ice maker feature installed on this unit.  If it is the drain tube, any hints on best way to check/fix?

Where is the water pooling exactly?

  • Samuel Charles Spriggs May 11, 2010

Your defrost-water theory is a possibility. May be also the icemaker leaking water.

The defrost water should run down a drain tube to a pan under the bottom of the fridge. This could be clogged, but if you have a lot of water, the problem is more likely with the icemaker.

Have you checked the icemaker for leaks?

Check door seal intact and sealing ok, clean rear compressor section of all dust/ dirt/ fluff and check drain hole on rear of fridge.as water should not pool inside but run away outside rear. Lift/ adjust door to make sure it closes properly.

Water is dripping into fridge compartment from section separating fridge and freezer compartments, otherwise, both seem to be working fine. unit was new in 2001, model ET21PK.

Hello,

That water is from the melting frost of the automatic defrost cycle. Their is drain in the freezer behind the back wall under the evaperator coil that is blocked, so instead of defrost water draining it's pooling in the freezer or in some case espically on models with the freezer on the top,the water is leaking from the freezer vents into the fresh food compartment.
The way to clear the drain is remove back plate and remove all ice build up and GENTLY make a small hole in drain through then totally flush w/warm water.
The exact location of drain is under the coil behind back freezer plate in the center

Good luck

I hope this helps

IN THE PAST I HAVE TAKEN THE UNIT OUT AND TURNED IT UPSIDE DOWN, AND LEFT IT SIT FOR ABOUT 1 MONTH. THEN REINSTALL THE FRIDGE, AND IT WORKS AGAIN.. .. REASON YOU MAY ASK ? THERE IS A LITTLE BULB THAT THE FLAME KISSES, AND IT SEEMS IT GETS TRASH INSIDE THE BULB, AND SLOWS THE HEAT TRANSFER .. YA I KNOW IT SOUNDS CRAZY, THAT'S WHAT I THOUGHT ALSO.. OH AND TO OPERATE THE UNIT NEEDS TO BE LEVEL (CHECK THIS FIRST !!) ..LAST ONE I DID WAS ABOUT 25 YEARS AGO..

When defrosting, were you able to check the back of the unit inside if the panel accumulated ice? You may need to unscrew it t check the back side. Sometimes the water or ice comes from that area. Check also of the thermostat located in that area may have been frozen which sends a wrong reading to the control unit. When you have cleaned the unit make sure you have cleaned the drains for debris. It may also be a problem with just the drain which sends water into the tray underneath. It may not be aligned.

Water collection in fridge

.you need to check the drain to make sure it is not clogged or blocked that would stop the water defrosted from you evaporator coil from draining into the drain pan.rare occasions the unit will stay in a defrost mode while trying to cool causing alot more water to be draining.good luck with your fridge.let me know how things go for you.

Hi GE top freezer fridge - 5 years old( no ice

Well for one thing that unit was manufactured 10 years ago. But it sounds like the defrost drain is clogged and the water is running down the inside of the unit. The evaporator (not condenser) is on the bottom of the freezer compartment. The bottom panel of the freezer comes out. They are a bit of a pain to do, but can be done.

Make sure this fan is running. You may have to hold the door switch in for it to run. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.
The problem could be the electronic control if you have one or the mechanical linkages.
