Microwave fan won't turn off

The fan on my microwave is has been on for 20 minutes and I can't turn it off.  I know that it will do this if the microwave is overheated, but it happened after I warmed up a cup of coffee for 1 minute.  Help!

Re: microwave fan won't turn off

It could be the failure of either the hood fan thermostat or a problem on the control board.

If it turns out to be the control board, we repair those for $39.95 nationwide.

If you or a friend decide to look into it, we have critical safety information, info on door switch diagnosis and replacement, and disassembly information at our site, linked here on Fixya:

Microwave would cut off after a few minutes and then turn back on but now there is no power at all.

There are few reasons for this fault, but the main is that you need to open your microwave oven and first check the Fan which is connected at the back which cools the magnetron.
If this fan fails thus results in magnetron being overheated and the thermal cutoff gets open circiut and shuts down whole power of your microwave oven.
Check your fan motor test it straight with direct power
Also check the thermal cutoff.

Let me know after you have done those checkups

Kenmore model 721 - Cooked a meal for 30 minutes. Afterwards the microwave did not heat. However, the next day it worked. A few days later, was operated for 20 minutes, and again did not heat, and has not...

Yes, there is a thermostat device located on the magnetron. It will open up (turning off the magnetron) when it gets too hot, and it will reset automatically after it cools back down (in 5 to 15 minutes). The question is, Why is is over-heating? Usually it is caused by the exhaust fan being turned the wrong way. (For example, it may be set to exhaust the air out through the top of the microwave, but you don't have a vent there.) That fan can be turned to exhaust air out the top, out the back, or recirculate the air back through the front of microwave. It's easy to turn it around - the hard part is that you have to take the microwave down to be able to pull the fan out and rotate it the right direction.

We have a kenmore ultra wave microwave and the fan has stopped working and now the microwave won't operate. Any suggestions?

see this causes and fix it .God bless you
Exhaust Fan Motor If the exhaust fan does not run the fan motor might be bad. Remove the fan motor from the microwave oven and see if the blades can be turned by hand. They should turn very freely, if they're stiff the fan motor will need to be replaced. The fan motor can also burn out. To test this use an Ohm meter. The motor should have continuity. If it does
Thermostat If the microwave exhaust fan is not working the thermostat might be defective. The thermostat senses the air temperature and turns on the fan as needed, if it's defective it won't turn on the fan. Watch our video on testing thermostats.

Main Control Board If the microwave exhaust fan is not working check the exhaust fan motor and wiring. If they are good the main control board might be defective.

I havent used this microwave before. Can you please give me step by instructions on how to cook a roast beef and vegetables

If this microwave is a convection oven, you don't give make or model, treat as a fan assisted oven. 20 minutes per pound and 20 minutes extra for the meat, veg is best microwaved for a few minutes except potatoes, put them in the dish with the meat. Cover to stop splashing and set temperature to 190 Celcius 370 in proper temperature.
I am getting hungry now!

Does the exhaunst fan turn on automatically when we cook or warm food items in our Samsung Microwave -- SMH 9187W?

Some interesting reading on page 8 of the owner's manual:

"Boilovers cause smoking and greasy spillovers that may ignite and spread if the vent fan is operating. To minimize automatic fan operation, use adequate sized cookware and use high heat on surface units only when necessary."

And on page 20:

"If the temperature becomes too hot around the microwave oven, the fan in the vent hood will automatically turn on at the LEVEL 2 setting to cool the oven. The fan will automatically turn off when the oven has cooled down sufficiently. This is an automated process and cannot be turned off. The fan may stay on for 30 minutes or more after the cooktop and microwave controls are turned off. The Vent Fan will only operate in 1~4 levels modes while the microwave is working."

"Using the Vent delay off button
1. Press the Delay Off button once to turn the fan off after 1 minute.
2. Press the Delay Off button twice to turn the fan off after 3 minutes.
3. Press the Delay Off button three times to turn the fan off after 5 minutes.
4. Press the Delay Off button fiour times to turn the fan off after 10 minutes.
5. Press the Delay Off button five times to turn the fan off after 30 minutes."

If for some reason you don't have your owner's manual, you can still download it free here.

The microwave quit working. I could still use the timer and the fan. After a year, I had a pot of water boiling on the right back burner of my cook top and the microwave exhaust fan came on. I could not...

I think a bad connection in a lucar styl plug is the problem.
Check all of the connectors that come from the switch/control pannel and the magnetron's transformer.
Make certain that it is not still charged up at a lot of voltage in the capacitor is lethal!!!!

Magic Chef won't work - clock works

Does the fan run?
If not, it's a control board fault.
If it does run, it's probably a high voltage problem.

Whirlpool Microwave MH6130XEB

If it's the cooling fan inside the main body of the microwave, I would suspect an open thermistor / temperature sensor. If it's the vent fan (for the grille across the top) then I would suspect the hood thermostat is shorted. The oven should have a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) inside, usually in the control panel frame behind the door open button. It shows these parts and how to test them. If you or a friend decide to work on it, we have *critical* safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info at our site, which is linked at our listing here on FixYa: You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your model number here:
