Question about GE Profile 26.6 cu. ft. Side-by-Side Refrigerator with Dispenser TFX27PRBWW
What would cause a tempered glass refrigerator shelf to shatter when the fridge is turned off and there is nothing in the fridge? I am trying to research this as I was cleaning my ( un- damaged -I believe) shelf over the sink when it exploded into thousands of pieces, some of which even flew into another room (maybe 35'), under appliances, up onto a shelf below my ceiling. I had been washing the (room temperature) shelf with warm soapy water and was holding it in my hands when it just exploded.
This is caused by stress in the glass which was not properly relieved in the manufacturing process -- in other word, it's a defective piece of tempered glass. The expansion & contraction produced when you cleaned it (subjecting it to changing temperatures) caused the glass to explode.
