1978 Shovelhead has a miss or backfires through the carb at slower speeds. Runs fine over 50 mph. Changed intake O ring gaskets, still pops and misses at slower speeds.

Make sure your hotwire to the coil is making a good connection. Check air intake manifold for air leak - o-rings can be tricky to get installed correctly. Finally, change carburator jet to richer mixture. Popping backk through the carb means lean fuel mixture.

MOTORCYCLE will not go over 50 mph or it bogs

iIf it is not fuel system, not fuel / air balance might be ignition system or wear and tear in the engine itself. Assuming the brakes are set up correctly and not dragging. Is the ignition timing correct. Is the compression okay? Cylinder head condition. spark leads good? Sounds like a trained mechanic with some diagnostic equipment might help you track the problem down.
Good Luck with it

Popping from pipes and carb

Hi Tommy, popping, coughing, spitting, or backfiring through the carburator or induction module can be caused by air getting sucked in combustion chamber do bad intake seals leaking. Leaking exhaust gaskets can also be suspect. Remove air cleaner and backing plate, while engine is idling spray WD-40 or Brake Kleen around intake manifold to head area, if RPM's increase you have an intake leak and seals need to be replaced, also spark plugs will be burning whiter than normal. Good luck

backfiring through the intake is usually a sign of a lean condition i would check the fuel pressure.

Backfires on deceleration and also is getting black above shift side carb.

A lot of backfiring on deceleration is related to reused or leaking exhaust gaskets in the head . The gaskets are leaking air into the exhaust. If you are experiencing carbon on the intake side , I would recommend replacing the intake o-rings and gaskets, spark plugs, and spark plug caps. These can all be related to backfiring through the carburetors.

Sounds like you have an intake leak. You can start the bike and spray the intake where it meets the heads with WD40. If you find any variation in the idle of the bike you have an intake leak and must change the seals. Be carefull to not spray the WD40 int the carb because this will alter the idle and give a false reading

1981 Wide Glide Bike is missing and backfiring

open up the ignition cover plate and check the backing plate. it may have come loose and threw the bike out of time.
make sure your plug wires are plugged on tight and the coil wires are secure.
It is most definitely a timing problem.
