You're lucky, my harddisk crashed. Found this on Internet: - First, carefully take off the plastic part (the one with satellite written on it), starting by one of the sides. - Then unscrew the keyboard (only 4 screws); - Then unscrew 2 screws in the hd case; - And voilá, here is the hd. The four keyboard screws mentioned above aren't the whole story. There are another three outside at the bottom of the laptop, marked "K". And maybe you´ll appreciate this link: http://www.toshibaweb.co.uk/toshiba/satellite/1620.htm

Lacie Case Only lighting up when HD is disconnected

I had the same problem with a 1TB hard drive. The fault was caused by the casing being knocked from the computer and falling onto the desk. If the hard drive hadn't been powered up it would have been ok...
I removed the hard drive from the casing and fitted it into my computer as a slave drive, hoping to access all the music and movies stored in it. No go .. But, it's worth you fitting your hard drive as a slave and trying the same. It's worth a shot.
I took the hard drive to a computer market here in China, where I work. These guys take hard drives apart to fix them, if possible. They couldn't fix my hard drive as it had been powered on when it fell ..
However, I bought a new desktop hard drive and they were able to transfer 95% of all things from the old hard drive to the new one. The cost of transferring from the old hard drive to the new hard drive was the same as the price of the new hard drive. That specialist service doesn't come cheap ... but it can be done. I paid simply because I didn't want to lose what had taken more than a year to download.
Try fitting your hard drive as a slave to see if you can access the information on it. If not, a new hard drive and the cost of transferring your music from your old hard drive may be the only course of action left open to you

Have replaced computer. Motherboard dead on old one. Is there any practical way I can get pictures and such from old computer. It will not power up. Thanks

You should be able to tak the hard drive out of the old one and put it in the new one as a secondary drive. There is a good chance, though, that the drive won't fit. If it doesn't, you'll need something like this.

Yes just fixed mine. Went to radio shack bought a gigaware sata 3.5 external enclosure.
Took the harddrive out of old enclosure. pryed off external alluminum case to expose a panel that sticks out to the side where the broken usb plug went. Wiggled that off then placed in new enclosure fits good. secured with old screws. plugged it in and it works great. The new usb plug is much sturdier. The external case cost me about $40.00 and some change but Im glad i retreaved my data. I will never buy another seagate. Hope this helps...Alan

The fact is that you don't really KNOW if the HD is broken, or just a track needs re-written. Do you have a bootable USB drive such as a flash drive, or a bootable CD such as Hiren's Boot CD, Parted Magic, or Dr. Web Cure It? Write back if you need more help!

If the disk-drive was LARGER than 500GB, it definitely would be a SATA drive; nobody makes IDE disk-drives larger than 500GB.

How about getting your friend to help you open the case?

Given that it is four years old, it probably pre-dates most SATA disk-drives.

Or, take it to a computer-store, and have them open it, and sell you a brand-new (and thus more "reliable") disk-drive?

Try to connect the external disk-drive to a different computer.
If you still cannot access any files, then either:
* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the case is malfunctioning,
* the disk-drive inside the case is malfunctioning.

Read the serial-number of the external disk-drive from the case, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and check to see if the "warranty" for the device is still available. If so, the manufacturer will replace the device -- you might have to pay "shipping" to send your device to them.

If the warranty has expired, open the case, remove the disk-drive, and connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in some desktop computer, to see if the USB-to-disk-drive device was the problem.

While the case is open, you could purchase a new disk-drive to fit into the case, and then close the case, and once again have a working "external" disk-drive.

Mini-USB port has broken off from my 500 gb Seagate drive

Yeah you can probably just get the enclosure dissassembled. googling " how to disassemble seagate freeagent pro" pulled up a few links but if you're not comfortable doing that, try asking for help from local college computer lab geeks. I'm on the other side of the country from you so, can't help you much. The usb port that fell off was probably connected to the drive via an adapter so likely the hard drive itself is not damaged. Data recovery is much more expensive and I agree it isn't reasonable for this kind of problem.

Cant open any files.

This might be a bit too obvious
First of all, the fact that your machine is showing random charaters after autoplay and that autoplay shows up on your c drive means your OS is corrupt. The most likely cause is that your hard drive is failing. A virus would not exist after a format reinstall except in the case of old boot viruses which are very rare and near impossible on varly new machines.
I recommend that you get a new hard drive. This would also explaing the drive confussion. If you know how to fit drives your self. take out any excess drives, and just have the primary hard drive on ide 1 and the cd rom on ide 2 and do another fresh install. IF not, then get someone who knows what they are doing to scan the drive using many online tools and replace the drive in teh event that errors are found
regards rahul
