Question about Dell Inspiron 1501 Notebook
Check to see if you are getting any flashing num, scroll,or caps lock lights you can also if you want a definite answer go to (http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/en/tree?c=us&l=en&s=gen&treeid=3D170450481B7790E040A68F5B2871BC), select the system type and go through the troubleshooting steps.
**Oh by the way if you turn on your system and then it turns back off after less then 3 seconds, according to dell troubleshooting we would be looking at replacing the motherboard.

Try removing one of the two memory SODIMMS under the cover on the bottom of the unit. It sounds like you could have a bad memory problem that is keeping the machine from completing the POST (power on self test). I'd try one stick at a time and see if that helps.
Good luck, please rate this solution if you feel it has helped!!
