2 Answers

Won't post/boot Dell inspiron 1501 powers on, spins optical drive, fan starts then stops. No vid, sometimes hear hard drive spin. Powers off immediately upon pressing power button. When power cord inserted, sometimes lights 'charging' led, more often not. Sometimes light flashes on briefly every 5 seconds or so.

I guess I failed to mention - I've tried powering up in just about every configuration possible: hard drive removed, optical drive removed, memory sticks out(one at a time and both), etc. I don't know it laptops are supposed to have beep codes, but I'm not getting any of those either.

I guess I failed to mention it, but I've tried booting in just about every configuration possible: hard drive out, optical drive out, memory out (one at a time and both together), etc. Also, I don't know if laptops are supposed to have beep codes or not, but I'm not getting any of them, either.

Thanks, ihack, for the troubleshooting heads-up. I'd danced all around dell's website, and hadn't found that tool. I went through the process (I hadn't known about the fn-key power up), and the blink code I arrived at wasn't one they listed in their table. I had the caps and scroll lock keys flashing, with the num locks off. Go figure. . . Anyway, I s'pect it's the mobo, or possibly the processor, or both. I may have fried the processor by leaving it powered on for too long with this problem occuring and no fan for cooling. I don't suspect there's any more for me to do other than swapping out one or both of the same and see if that fixes it.

To atulbamne, the OS is XP, but that's not an issue here, since the 'pute won't even post. Thanks anyway.

Check to see if you are getting any flashing num, scroll,or caps lock lights you can also if you want a definite answer go to (http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/en/tree?c=us&l=en&s=gen&treeid=3D170450481B7790E040A68F5B2871BC), select the system type and go through the troubleshooting steps.

**Oh by the way if you turn on your system and then it turns back off after less then 3 seconds, according to dell troubleshooting we would be looking at replacing the motherboard.

Try removing one of the two memory SODIMMS under the cover on the bottom of the unit. It sounds like you could have a bad memory problem that is keeping the machine from completing the POST (power on self test). I'd try one stick at a time and see if that helps.
Good luck, please rate this solution if you feel it has helped!!

Do you hear the hard drive spinning? If so, reboot unit and press F10 or F12 for Boot menu. In the boot menu you should see Hard drive or C/: as a selection, if not, the drive has stop working. I hope that helps.

Power up laptop dell 1501 ,stays on until you logg on then after log on and programs load all power is lost

When the CPU overheats then it will shut down (i.e. thermaloverload) and won't boot up again until it has cooled down. If this is theproblem is not fixed then the CPU will eventually fail.
A faulty fan causes the problem or the fan and heat sink assembly are cloggedwith dust.
Check the CPU fan to see if it spins freely, if not replace the fan.
If the fan and heat sink is clogged with dust the remove the dust and make surethe vents are clear and dust free. Use a can of compressed air to do this.

Hi, I have not spoken to you before, I take it the PC was working fine before you switched hard drives?? If so, check to see if you can boot into BIOS, by pressing the F1 key during doot up. If you can and the previous question is Yes, then I believe you will need to reinstall XP.
Hope this helps

Hi
You probably have a mother board issue. Most likely the video chip. Take this to a reputable repair person or check my website www.micromendllc.com.

Try this

You might also try an external monitor and see if you get any video that way (Fn+F8 toggles to enable external video)

Dell inspiron 1501 shuts down very often automatically even after changing the battery.

is the laptop running unusually quiet? when you start it up hold it up to your ear and see if you can hear a fan spinning. its not uncommon for a laptops cooling fan to come from factory jammed. if its stuck you can usually dislodge it with a firm smack (after the laptop has been cut off and battery removed, wait a few seconds to make sure the hard drive has spun down).

either the power supply or the motherboard itself failed. it's quite difficult to say which one produces the problem without testing.

Dell XPS M140 laptop shuts off after powering on

Most laptops that I have worked on that power off that quickly turned out to be an overheating problem. Is the cooling fan running for the brief period that you can hear the hard drive before it powers off ? If the fan is running another potential resolution might be to remove the processor and apply new thermal paste.
