My printer has been saying the waste ink absorber is nearly full for a couple of weeks now. I haven't been able to find out how to replace it, and now the printer won't work. It's a PIXMA MP130. I've been into menu>scan>copy>scan>NVRAM Access to get to the service menu, and set the levels for ABS-M and P to 0, but it didn't help.

  • copeland Nov 17, 2007

I followed the directions. I think mine is too far gone? It has completely shut down and just won't print at all.

    Help!!!!

Thanks for the help. I followed the "Reverend's" directions on cleaning the waste absorbers on the Canon MP 130. I guess it was too late. The pads did get lighter in color but I couldn't enter the "Menu" to go on with the process. I got "Invalid key set" and could not go on. Unless I figure this out, I guess it's a new printer for me. I would not buy this one again since the ink cartriges have to be changed after only about 50 pages. I will look for another printer with better overall costs. JosiO

I am getting LCD message "Waste Ink Absorber is Almost Full" on my PIXMA MP130 printer. A recent post showed a solution provided by "Reverend." Can I get a copy of that solution?

  • Anonymous Jan 24, 2008

Own a Canon Pixma MP130 & just got message saying my wast ink absorber is full . . . I have spent quite a bit of time online searching for a solution but can't seem to find anything online that tells me how to fix the problem. This machine runs out of ink every few days, and can't print more than a few pages before the paper jams. I seriously recommend that you DO NOT BUY this machine . . .Nothing but trouble since I bought it! . . . I know that I will never buy another Canon printer!

Canon Pixma MP130 - waste ink absorber is full

  • Rockdiva Jan 25, 2008

I'd like to suggest a slight modification to The Reverand's beautiful solution. Instead of tissues, use a new, clean, cheap sponge. Rip it into 1" square (approximately - this isn't science after all) pieces. Use these, instead of tissues to absorb the ink. It'll only take about two quick presses with two different pieces and the ink absorbers will be back to grey. Have a baggie handy to put your ink soaked sponge pieces in. Save the remainder of the sponge for next time.

To the baby who wined that he'll never buy Canon again. Canon is an awesome brand. I've been in the Word Processing business (high volume of printing) since the 80s and of all the many, many brands of printers I've owned, my Canons have always been the least troublesome and longest lasting.

Message on LCD reads 'The waste ink absorber is almost full - see manual'

There is no mention in the manual of a waste ink absorber. can anyone suggest what this might be and how do I solve the problem?

  • Anonymous Dec 02, 2008

i have the same problem..but cannot be solve by using tissue or sponge...i suggest this brand is too low of quality n do not buy this canon printer again

  • normwand Dec 02, 2008

canon mp130 "almost full message" still prints though.

  • normwand Dec 02, 2008

Thanks to Reverend for noting the waste ink absorbers are the head resting pads at the RH side where the heads reside when power is off. I was anxious to solve this problem because the ink for the MP130 is cheapest of all and I had laid in a huge supply. What a relief as I also depend heavily on this printer for scanning. Thank you too PIXMA FIXYA

Have on hand a flashlight and some table napkins or lint-free tissues
Open up the lid of your MP130
The cartridge carriage will move to the left (the position in which you change cartridges)
With the torch look inside the right hand corner at the end of the print head track
At the end of the track are two foam pads about 2cm x 1cm sitting together
Fold the table napkin or heavy lint free tisa good tosue into a pad about 2 cm
With the pad in your right hand and the torch in your left
reach inside the machine with the tissue and
gently press the tissue into the absorber pads (repeat if necesary)
Do not take too long as the printer heads return after a minute or so.
If the printer heads return and you get your hand out in time
just close the lid and open it again and you have more time
when you judge the tissue has absorbed enough ink from the sodden absorbers
and the absorbers are grey looking instead of blackish
swith off the torch and find a place to put the ink-sodden tissue (WPB, Floor File, trash)
close up the lid again and reset the indicator (here's how:)
press "menu"
press in succession "scan - copy - scan"
The indicator window will tell you you are in "service mode"
(you have invaded techie territory )
press the ' >" ( +) key until "NVRAM" displays
press "OK" (you have entered the inner sanctum )
press the ">" key until ABS-M or ABS-P appears on the display
press OK and "1" should appear
press " - " (the minus key) and it should change to "0"
Now you have to reset both pads separately, so you do the other one.
When you have reset both ABS-M and ABS-P, heave a sigh of relief
and press the "STOP" button and the display will be back to normal
and nobody need ever know you have been in the techie zone.
Act innocent -
you have defeated a poor design feature exclusive to Canon designed to impoversih you
you have saved yourself the angst of buying and installing a new printer
you have beaten the system.

This is not brilliant. If you follow these instructions you will reset the error, but since the "pads" he is telling you to clean are not the absorbers, eventually you will end up with ink all over your desk when the absorbers inside your machine overflow.
This is why amateurs should not offer solutions on these boards.
If you want to do this correctly, you will have to take the machine apart, remove the print mechanism and clean or replace the large absorber that resides under the print mechanism. This machine is a non-repairable unit Canon has made as "disposable". Taking it apart to get at the absorbers is much more difficult than the average machine. I an an Authorized Canon service person, and even I don't like taking these units apart.
Once again, follow the instructions given by Reverend at your own risk. Do not place this machine over anything of value if you decide to do what he suggests. You WILL end up eventually with overflowing absorbers.

Reverend said: " Do not take too long as the printer heads return after a minute or so.

What I did is : open the lid and then unplug the printer. The heads remain in the middle so you can have plenty of time for cleaning.

Tip

"The waste ink absorber is almost full" message?

This applies to the CANON PIXMA MP130 and other ink-jets made by Canon/Pixma.

According to the user's manual, "Ink used to clean the print head is absorbed by the waste ink tank. When this message is displayed, the waste ink tank needs to be replaced, or the machine requires maintenance". There is no information about how to replace or empty the waste ink tank.

In any case, you can try the following to clear up the error, but eventually you'll need the waste tank to be emptied or replaced. And as far as I know, you can't find the replacement parts to buy, nor the instructions to empty the waste tank.

Turn on your MP130.
1) After that press: Menu - Scan - Copy - Scan or Menu-Copy-Scan-Copy-Copy in some models, it depends on the date it was produced)
2) Select TEST MODE.
3) Enter NVRAM ACCESS
4) Select SET ABS-M LEVEL TO 0
5) Select OK
6) Keep selecting OK untill you leave the TEST MODE

Then turn it OFF and again ON. Check if the error message is still there.
The following is taken from the Canon website, regarding this specific error:

"Canon recommends having the printer serviced before the absorber becomes full. We are aware that there are many "do-it-yourself" Web sites that offer instructions for making this repair. Replacing the ink absorber is a complicated and potentially messy procedure. Even if the ink absorber is successfully changed, the ink absorber counter must be reset. Be aware that if you attempt this procedure, it is at your own risk."

As I mentioned before, I have not found any way or procedure to empty or replace the waste ink absorber nor the necesary replacement part.

Waste ink absorber full

Hi There you can try
How To Reset Waste Ink Canon Pixma MP130

The waste ink take is actually just a felt pad that sits under the printer mechanism inside the case and absorbs the ink from your cleanings.
From what I gather, it’s both a time consuming and expensive proposition to take to Canon to fix.
And they won't tell people how to do it themselves.

Remember of course, you've got to cycle the cleaning process a huge amount of times to get this to occur.

But when it does, there is a fix-it-yourself solution that is both safe and effective for the printer, and free.
You have to be slightly mechanical to do this.
If you you've never used a screwdriver and are all thumbs, but give it a shot or give it to someone halfway coordinated to do this for you.

You may RESET the printer code first if you like or do it after you clean the pad

Here this step by step to resetting waste ink counter printer Canon Pixma MP130

1.You will include printer
2. Press button MENU, then SCAN, COPY and again SCAN - they entered
into the service regime
3. Select NVRAM ACCESS and further BY OK.
4. Select SET Abs- m level and advance value equal to zero
5. Select SET Abs- r level (if there is) and also you will establish into zero
6. You will turn off printer by button POWER.

Please come back and just gave a vote, it will gave me some satisfaction to know am helping some one so I will keep on helping.

You can't empty that one, you need a shop to replace the pads which are under the printer, and they can reset the waste ink counter at the same time.

The waste ink disposal is almost full and it won't print

The waste ink absorber is almost full. Press [OK] to continue but early replacement recommended. <See manual>
WASTE INK NEAR FULL The printer has a built-in waste ink absorber to hold the ink used during print head cleaning, for example. This error message indicates that the waste ink absorber is nearly full.
Press the OK button to cancel the error so you can continue printing.
Before the waste ink absorber becomes completely full, contact a Canon1.gif service representative. (You will need to replace a particular part of the printer.) Canon recommends that you call for service as soon as this error occurs. Once the waste ink absorber becomes completely full, printing cannot be performed until the Waste ink tank is replaced.
