Question about HP LaserJet 1320n Printer

HP Laserjet 1320 Paper feed malfunction

I've been using this printer successfully for quite a while.  A couple of days ago the paper feed stopped working.  The printer works because I can hand feed single sheets of paper through the upper feeder that I usually use for printing envelopes.  What isn't working is the spring that raises the paper up to the feeder.  I can manually trip it.  But when I slide the tray into the printer it will not release.

What (short of buying another printer) can I do?

Re: HP Laserjet 1320 Paper feed malfunction

 take out the tray

if you look on the bottom of the machine there is a metal plate.

in the middle of the plate there is a bump

turn the tray upside down and look at the bottom, there is a small hole with a plastic lever. it is probably broken.

when the tray is slid into position the lever hits the bump and releases the lifting mechanism.

replace that part or the tray. I can get you a new tray e-mail me at

Paper feeds with nothing on it

A common fault on these is the tab on the toner door that actuates the laser shutter breaks off.

On the front door around 3 inches from the right , there should be a thin piece of plastic 1/2 inch x 1/4 inch.

This should go into a corresponding slot on the printer.

If this is the case, fold up a piece of paper and push it into the slot.

HP 1320 duplex printing paper jam

Managed to solve this myself: I disassembled the printer and noticed there was a paper jammed in the duplex tray. Rolls were all ok, but the paper blocked the use of the duplex pathway. For disassembly help check the HP 1320 service manual, which you can find on the net as a PDF.

Load Noises

If the HP LaserJet series printer is experiencing a grinding or odd noise when printing or on power-up, open the printer and remove the print cartridge. Close the printer door.
If the noise does not recur with the print cartridge removed, replace the print cartridge.
If the noise persists, this may indicate a hardware failure. If possible, isolate and identify the location of the noise and contact a local HP sales and service ofice at the number noted in the product User's Guide . A list of phone numbers can be found at .

Laserjet 1320 will not pick paper

Paper misfeeds and failure to pickup the paper are both common symptoms of a worn pickup roller. This roller is on the bottom of the printer as shown in the attached picture.
With use the rubber tire gets smooth and can't grip the paper enough to pick it up and push it into the printer. The roller kit is easy to install yourself and will get the printer back going as good as new. You can get the roller kit here:

I hope this helps, if so please rate my solution.
