Cursor jumps around

My cursor jumps all over the place for no reason - if my palms are resting on either side of the cursor pad, it triggers a jump - also if the cursor is on the window in which I'm typing it jumps to where the cursor is. I have to scoot the cursor off screen in order to type, although this doesn't always solve the problem. I can't type a sentence w/o it jumping - anyone else have this problem? How can I fix this? thanx! I have just bought an Aspire7720G laptop and have the same cursor jumping problem - just installed the 'touchfreeze' software as suggested and it seems (fingers crossed) to have solved the problem. Excellent!! It has been driving me insane!! Many thanks for the help :) After typing several words in a document, my cursor jumps to other places in the document, on it's own

I have suggested in the past that people with this type of problem download Intellipoint Mouse software, from Microsoft.

It's a free download, and so far, I have had a good rate of this solution working.

Here is the download page from Microsoft.com,

Does the cursor jump around when your hands are nowhere near the touchpad? The touchpads are heat and pressure sensitive. I personally have very warm (and sometimes sweaty) hands. I have this problem often when working on laptops. If I hover my hands over the pad, it causes the mouse to move. I've had to take a business card, put tape on one side of it, and use it as a flip-cover for the touchpad on most of my laptops. If the cursor moves around when you're nowhere near the laptop, then you may want to try disabling the pointing stick (if it has one). I've had several clients with laptops where the pointing stick mouse control go crazy and move and click on things.

SOURCE: Cursor jumps around

Hi,
I was having the same problem and what I did after doing some research was to roll back the driver that was installed to an earlier version (control panel/device manager/mouse/synaptics touchpad/driver/driver rollback) once that was done under control panel/mouse/device settings/settings i was finally able to adjust the sensitivity settings. This finally fixed the problem for me, I hope it helps you because it is a very frustrating problem.

I have had this same issue. I realized one day that the palm of my hand was touching the track pad intermittently. Some of the HP laptops have super sensitive track pads. Mine actually has a button that disables it for typing. let me know, if this helps.

How to Fix Windows 7 cursor jumps backward while typing Outlook messages.

Well, technically it is not moving it backwards, it is moving the cursor to wherever the 'pointer' is.
You need to STOP resting your palm(s) on the Touchpad.

When you touch it, it will move the cursor to wherever the 'pointer' is....which is likely where you started typing.

You can also turn-off the touch-pad if you will be doing lots of typing. This is done by pressing [Fn] and [F3].

When i type in my MS word or replying mail using outlook, my cursor jumps to somewhere, actually it just happened several times when i type this message

On your touch pad exists a place that works like a scroller on the mouse (Usually the right part of pad with white lining). When you rest your wrists in this area, the cursor usually jumps in another place. I'm of course hoping that this is the problem and that your touch pad works fine. Try it and please tell me if this fails..

This happens for 1 of 2 reasons: 1. Either your wrist hits the mouse pad and that makes the cursor move
2. If your mouse moves all the time without your control you need to have your palm rest replaced
When this works vote me a 10

Keyboard problem- cursor keeps jumping around when I'm typing

You may be inadvertently touching the touch pad with the side of your hand or fingers as you type OR the touch pad itself is bad and needs replacement.

Cursor jumps around

If your cursor moves erratically on the screen (for example, if it jumps around the screen, moves at varying speeds, or selects items on its own), perform the following steps:
  1. Clean the surface of the touchpad with a dry, soft cloth to remove grease, sweat, moisture, or other liquids.
  2. Adjust the sensitivity of the touch pad:.
    1. Click the Start button and click Control Panel.
    2. Click Printers and Other Hardware.
    3. Click Mouse.
    4. When the Mouse Properties window appears, click the Pointer Options tab. (Figure 1)

      Figure 1: Pointer Speed
    5. Under Select a pointer speed:, click to move the slider bar closer to Slow.
    6. Click OK.
    7. Check to see if the touch pad still behaves erratically.
  3. If the touchpad still caused the cursor to behave erratically, attach an external mouse to your computer and restart your computer. Use the external mouse to see if your cursor still moves erratically.

Try this software:

http://code.google.com/p/touchfreeze/downloads/list

Touch Freeze will disable the touchpad when you start typing. I have not used it, but give it a try.

Also, your touchpad could be wearing out or a driver reinstall could be in order. My wifes Toshiba had a bad touchpad and the cursor would jump all over the place. I disabled it and she now uses an external mouse. No problems anymore.
