In 1st it just screams up the revs and moves slowly same in second, in 3rd with foot right down it grips better but still not enough to pull as it should, this problem has increased every time the car has been drivin. Could it just need tightening or would you say i need new clutch.
The first thing to check is the clutch release mechanism for faults. If a cable check that the clutch operates fully from dis-engaged to engaged as if the pressure plate is held 1/2 off then the clutch will slip. If hydraulic the same fault will be from a master cylinder that has a blockage in the compensating port. It is cheaper to fix the operating bits before pulling out the gear box because normally if a clutch is worn out or the pressure plate is broken you will go nowhere regardless.
thank you when you say from disengaged to engaged, i take it you mean the first point of engagement is that correct sorry i don't know much at all about cars, if it helps its a 2003 previa gls d4d, 2.0 will that mean it's cable or hydraulic? or how do i find out. My wife said she was driving down the motorway and heard a clunking noise so she slowed down and then the smell of burning rubber or water came from the car, we still get that smell now once car has gone so far. I checked water levels etc and all are fine.

A clutch cable doesn't take much to install. Who told you $600.00?? You don't have to take the trans. loose to do this. All you do is unhook the cable from pedal and unhook if from the trans. This job should only take you an hour if you've never done it before. How long has the clutch been in your car?

i have just replaced an 03 civic ex clutch and transmission bearings due to a customer being too harsh on it. It sounds like its got a little life left in it if you are easy on it.
if there is adjustment in this model use the below walkthrough to adjust it.
adjust the clutch pedal,
1. if you look up on the top of the clutch pedal, the first thing you should see if a clutch pedal position switch, and right behind it there is a locknut, looens the locknut. once you loosen it, back off on the pedal position switch or adjusting bolt untill it no longer touches the clutch pedal.
2. now behind the clutch pedal, there is a pushrod. and on that pushrod, there is a locknut, loosen that locknut. Now turn the pushrod in or out to get the desired height and stroke at the clutch pedal.
The freeplay is the amount of push on the clutch pedal to where is starts to have resistance from the top. I have usually been told it should be set at 1 1/2-2 inches of freeplay.
Once you set it, tighten the locknut on the pushrod. With the clutch pedal released, turn in the clutch pedal position switch untill it contacts the clutch pedal. then turn it an additional 3/4 to 1 turn. And tighten the locknut.
Now on top of the clutch pedal switch, there is a clutch interlock switch. Loosen the locknut on that switch. then press the clutch pedal to the floor.
release the clutch pedal 15-20 mm (0.59-0.79 in) from the fully pressed position, and hold it there. adjust the position of the clutch interlock switch so the engine will start with the clutch pedal in this position. then tighten the locknut on that switch.
Hope this helps
SOURCE: how do i tighten a clutch cable on a 97 jetta gls
There's a star wheel on the cable at the firewall. You can adjust it there. You can put tension on the clutch fork, that way you can see which way to turn the wheel to tighten it up. Hope this is helpful Phil
SOURCE: grinding sound on pressing clutch in at high revs
The grinding sound may be a throw out bearing or the pilot bearing. The sticking throttle problem sounds like a linkage or cable binding up from possibly damage due to the impact from the accident.

to be fully honest if its doing this its wont be nothing to do the the fluid, the clutch plate will be sticking on the shaft untill you get it upto a higher speed,, that means you will need a complete clutch fitted, because as its slipping it is burning the clutch plate away,, you have new clutch fitted and car will be great. . playing away with things only makes matters worse and time comsuming ..
