Runs but will not go

I have a 25hp 48" cut craftsman lawn tractor. while mowing today, started smoking real bad between bottom of tractor and top od mowing deck. I stopped blades and cleaned out grass on top of deck. started bac up and drive belt came off, now it will not run forward or reverse. Makes a grinding noise when pressing down the pedal to run. Appreiciate any response to repair or what it might be. thanks Brooks

Hello brookspiercy:

From your Description it Sounds like a New Belt is Required and Possibly a New Clutch Idler Arm or Idler Pulley. The Grinding Sound like it May be the Bearings of the Clutch Idler Pulley.

I'd be tempted to shield the spring from the heat of the exhaust - is there any way to pop rivet on a piece of aluminium sheet and bend it to not impede the operation of the clutch?

Throttle adjustment on lawn tractor

look at the bottom of the bowl on the carb, on the newer mowers, companies have installed a thing called the "fuel shut of solenoid" and on the end of it..there's either a short rod that comes to a point..or it could be perfectly round and flat, unscrew the solenoid and try cutting the tip of that rod off a little bit. and screw the solenoid back in. that should solve your problem. those solenoids aren't really needed, they were just put on to help stop the engines from backfiring. and when they go bad, problems like yours happen. it happened to my lawn mower, one day it was running just fine, than the next day it wasnt wanting to start, and if it did..it'd sputter and die.

It sounds as though you are losing power (electrical power); see if charging the battery fully allows it to run longer or if charging the battery helps.

Runs 5 mins. and quits seems to be out of gas. cuts out until it

Sounds like you have a stuck float in the carburetor. Sometimes a piece of grit will get in there. You can remove the float bowel location bottom of carburetor , turn off fuel first or pinch line shut needle nose vise grips do a good job for this. First lightly tap the float and blow though fuel line. If it sat a long time might just be a little varnish from old fuel. If still can not blow though line remove float and if need replace needle and seat.
