it is a whirlpool washer. i removed the screw and removed the whole agitator. and it looks like the dogs on the top half are working. the noise seems to coming from the lower half. when i pulled the agitator off; all that i could see was the shaft.i didn't see any part that could be replaced. the next question that come to my mind is there a part for the lower half that needs replacing. if i had a diagram it would be helpful.

is the transmission separate from the motor. or do i replace the motor.

  • iamstarflowe May 13, 2009

when u say expensive is it better to purchase another washer or just replace the transmission.

  • iamstarflowe May 13, 2009

i believe the washer was built in 99 serial number is cj4539914 so if that is correct it is 10 yrs old

Hi,
If this a whirlpool brand washer, there are sone parts bad in the agitator it's self. These parts are called dogs and they make the agitator rachet so that the top half only goes one direction. Does this sound like what you are experiencing? If so, let me know and I can assist you further.

Thanks
Vic

The only other thing is the gears in the transmission.

You would need to replace the tansmission which is easier then it sounds but quiete expensive.

We sell the transmission on our sire for 166.00. How old is it?

K, Kind of at that iffy stage. If it was mine (course I have changed many so I know what to expect) I would change it. If you need to get a repairman to change it, it would not be worth the cost. Have you have much work done on this machine?

Ok, Well if the spin cycle is working ok but the agitator (upper and lower 1/2) are not working, the transmission will need to replaced. At 10 years old and you have had nothing done to this one, I would probably look into a new one. I consider the model the better ones out there. I have a Roper (Same thing) and I like 'em. The more basic you buy (control wise) the better.

Can you describe the problem more better? Does it still agitate properly? Have you checked the balance of the tub? I believe you have a bent agitator shaft.

sounds like you are dealing with the same problem as me .
take off the front panel (after unplugging power) take a flash lite and look at the large pulley at the back just below the pulley is the helix check to see if they are worn .

My Maytag Ensignia washer is not spinning well. It bangs side to side with even the smallest loads. It seems like something is loose. Is this something I can fix myself or do I need a repair mans help....

Try leveling the washer... If the washer is level, then don't wrap the clothes around the agitator...drop the clothes straight in, on top of each other evenly around the agitator. The Ensignia washer has a Dual action agitator... That means the clothes roll over them selves, instead of moving side to side, as with a traditional agitator. wrapping the clothes around the agitator will cause the load to be un balanced and then cause the "banging" noise... this should take care of the problem...

Series 70 prob: Recently started wrapping clothes around agitator

some fabrics are known to do that you have on wrong cycle setting there should be a setting for delicates and clothing and blankets and things when loaded to close to agitator will attract each other together so its wise when loading machine load in a circle leveled out till desired fullness away from agitator they shouldnt attract as much
